I’m using my Macs as stationary computers. One usb-c / thunderbolt cable connects the whole setup including power supply.
I see no reason to have those huge PC boxes in 2023. Laptops all the way…

PS: Why do Pros use laptops for making music?
They might do live performance and then portability is essential.

For real, the modulators are unbelievably good, and even make some excellent plugins w/ modulation features unnecessary because it's so easy to modulate parameters in Bitwig. The built in devices are also so good that I probably would not have bothered to buy many of the FX I have bought, if I had Bitwig before.

Bitwig feels to me more like a bridge between a more traditional DAW and Ableton Live, with the best of both.
Video about one creative use of Bitwig's project level modulators.

My most recent experience was a 2020 MSI Laptop, and I replaced it with an M1 Macbook Pro in November as just fed up with the battery life, going to use it and it's dead, fan noise, DPC issues, Thermal issues... The difference is night and day.

Not sure what's so silly there, perhaps you've not had to be reliant on a laptop on the move? There is nothing worse than pulling it out the bag and it's dead and you have no way of charging. I can get easily get a full days work from my Macbook, and it can sit for weeks and hold battery as it's not switching on trying to update sneakily behind me.

So very impressive, and fact that I can control when it updates is a massive factor for me professionally. Never get that shitty "Hey this is Microsoft, we've restarted your machine" when opening it.

Followed by the "let's run through some questions where we try to get you to Edge browser, shall we?"... And the "Hey! We're trying to sync all your documents and desktop to onedrive without you asking, can you log in please?". etc.

I do agree windows laptops are rubish mostly, I have avoided buying one for years, and I love my custom build PC.

But apple come withs it's fare share of obsolecense rubish.

Windows never restarts for me unless I tell it to, even for updates. I just get a little icon saying it needs a restart to update.

I dunno... Last time I was at one of Bitwig's parties, there wasn't enough booze and it kept insulting all the guests and pinching the lad's and lassie's bottoms.

Terrible host,
I started on Logic 5 with a PowerBook G4 550Mhz. I now have a MacBook Air M1 and it's ~165x faster! So, why is my music not proportionally better? :(

Trensharo wrote: Fri Jul 21, 2023 3:34 pm The people using "Free" REAPER are generally not the same people who pay $750 for Ableton Live Suite or $2,600 for Pro Tools | Ultimate. Yes, I know there are switchers, but not to that extent (not even close).
Those people paying for Ableton is probably, other than a controller, their entire music investment.

Everyone I know who uses Reaper have thousands invested in instruments, mics, amps, cabs or outboard. So the price paid for software doesn't mean much at all.

In fact, I can't think of one Reaper user I know who just uses it on it's own self contained DAW as a Fruity/Ableton user would.
That depends on what segment of the market you operate in.

If we're going by the people who tend to be active on web forums... not quite. They're the same people diving into the Internet's Chest of Freebies.

In the grand scheme of things, I agree with you. Except I think most people who pay for Live Suite at least have an Audio Interface, MIDI Controller and at least a pair of headphones or 3.5" Monitors ;-) Many will also own Synths like Serum ($190) and quite a few will own plug-ins that aren't exactly cheap (considering they often are purchased for the UX, like Pro-Q3, and not necessarily for any functional advantage given how those people use them).

Most people will spend more on additional software and hardware than the DAW itself, to the obsession [in some circles] with DAW MSRP only avoids being puzzling because it is so expected given the audience participating in those discussions.

Most professionals will buy the DAW they want because the DAW will pay for itself - providing they're getting it for the proper reason, and not simply to bandwagon perceived market sentiments.

The Windows FUD is like Antibiotic-Resistant Chlamydia. Just when you think it has gone away, you open the forum and see the seepage.

The same people who complain about this tend to be those who either haven't used Windows is almost a decade, or refused to upgrade past Windows 7.

The former makes them a troll for not seeing how intellectually daft the statement is from that vantage point, the latter just doesn't deserve any sympathy. It's been so long since then, I can't even empathize.

OR, they're the people who don't take the 20 minutes to go through settings when setting up a new PC and basically setting everything up the way they want it on day one - something I do on any PC or Mac (because macOS has a setting to auto-install updates now, as well!).
