True peaks (ie. ISPs) are only a problem in extremely pathological cases (most ISPs are below 1dB) and with bad DACs. At that point, if the DAC is bad, most probably it is going to sound like crap anyway. The only case where it might matter is when you are converting something to a lossy format, but at that point, your true peak should be, according to conservative advice, below -1dB anyway (FWIW, I'm not convinced that lossy encoders struggle with ISPs).aberration123 wrote: Tue Jan 09, 2024 10:42 pm My feeling was EL sounded good even at stupid amounts of reduction, plenty of options to alter the sound if needed. Managed 20db of reduction on a kick drum, it gelled it nicely, reduced the output to suit and sounded fine.
Most sensible people I've watched have stated True Peak is BS for the most part.
What limiter are u using?

Ever use a saturation or distortion plugin?BackInCheck wrote: Tue Jan 09, 2024 5:23 pmIt sounds pretty bad (not good), even at moderate gain reduction levels. Well, not surprising, considering that it's based on the obsolete L1 limiter of the late 1990s. Why would I use a bad sounding limiter, when I can use a free limiter like Kilohearts Limiter, that sounds significantly better for all basic limiting purposes? Not to mention dedicated mastering limiters like Tokyo Dawn Limiter 6.vitocorleone123 wrote: Tue Jan 02, 2024 11:22 pmThe input/output are amplifiers - the limiting is set to 0.0. Same deal as the free W1 so for me only worth using on tracks/buses.jbraner wrote: Fri Dec 29, 2023 6:54 pmYeah - this is the one we've been waiting for.

And if you don’t like how it sounds, leave it those who know better
It doesn’t replace a clean limiter on the mix bus or whenever that’s needed. But that’s not always needed.

If I want saturation, I use a dedicated saturation plugin. However, I don't want my dynamics plugins to cause distortion inadvertendly as an undesired side-effect.vitocorleone123 wrote: Wed Jan 10, 2024 4:12 amEver use a saturation or distortion plugin?BackInCheck wrote: Tue Jan 09, 2024 5:23 pmIt sounds pretty bad (not good), even at moderate gain reduction levels. if you're having conversations about embedded saturation vs discrete saturation tools, I think you may be attending the wrong parties.

Imagine attending a party, and when asked a question, someone politely shares his point of view - an opinion differing from yours?
The horror!

Same. They seem to do the job well. Is there something better? Maybe, but I’ve never found them to be lacking.jamcat wrote: Wed Dec 06, 2023 12:04 pm I’m using the UAD 1176 and LA-2A Limiting Amplifiers a lot on channels now.
And I still use IK Stealth Limiter at the end of my 2-buss, as I have for years.

El Juan, to me, is a dedicated saturation plugin that functions a bit like overdrive (yeah I’m simplifying). I even have a hardware analog gear (Acidbox 3) that has a built in limiter that starts getting hit harder and distorts as you crank the input level. I have another analog overdrive that tends to flatten things out and eventually distorts. I have another analog pedal, a chorus pedal, that you can get to distort if you crank the input volume.BackInCheck wrote: Thu Jan 11, 2024 9:30 amIf I want saturation, I use a dedicated saturation plugin. If I want to cleanly limit something I’d use a plugin designed for that. I have and use others.
