Hi everyone,

I am still new and will be on a journey to produce hardstyle. Though right now I want learn to sound design and make my own distorted 909 kick similar to the TR909. Then once I nail that down then I will continue to make a nustyle hardstyle kick from that. Anyways I am going to be using Serum or Vital.

1. With the 909 kick how many oscillators does it consists of? Also how many and what waveforms is needed?

2. What are some modulations and effects is needed?

3. What would the amp envelope, pitch envelope, ADSR envelope look like?

4. If anyone that has experience with this could you please let me know what I need to do to achieve this in Serum or Vital please? Greatly appreciate it.

Thank you!

Could you post a sound example of the hardstyle tone looking for? I have Serum and can make a patch for you. That way you'd be able to study it hands-on or even use it as jumping point for your own creations.

Oscillators & envelopes? None.

But it's still clearly a synthesised sound, unlike the ubiquitous 909 hats/crash. I'm pretty sure the kick, snare, toms are all synthesised.

Yeah, they're synthesized.

Actually, it's all described in the linked Wikipedia article.

Ah right, only the hihat & cymbals were samples.

True, mostly synthesis except for metalwork

The 909's distinctive feature is the thump which is somewhat counterintuitive in that the Amp Env Att is a bit slow and the pitch Env Depth is pretty massive. If the attack were faster, we'd hear a brighter zapper sound but by having things as they are, we hear the "thump" more than the "brummm" of the 808 tail.

After that, distort it as you please.

It's actually one of the easiest kicks to roughly synthesise.

Do yourself a favour and just get PsyLab for creating kicks. There is nothing that comes even remotely close to what PsyLab can do. Be aware that you'll need 5+ hours to learn the plugin, that's how deep it is.
