There certainly aren’t as many post punk American bands. I would say that the closest would be:BONES wrote: Wed Jan 31, 2024 2:17 pmI'm not sure there are any American Post Punk bands, are there? I mean, from back in the day. Like most worthwhile music, it's an English/European thing. Maybe Wall of Voodoo would qualify? Perhaps Minimal Man, too? Definitely not Fugazi and LCD Soundsystem only in the worst way (I find their stuff universally awful).Uncle E wrote: Wed Jan 31, 2024 12:29 amFugazi? LCD Soundsystem? I’m curious where the genre starts and ends.

Lydia Lunch
Romeo Void
Talking Heads
And probably a few others
But undoubtedly, most are from Europe.

This is also a very good answer.ghettosynth wrote: Wed Jan 31, 2024 5:04 am My most tolerated genre is a meta genre, it's minimal, but that as applied to any genre, not some specific kind of music. Satie is minimal, Hawtin is minimal, Buddy Guy is minimal. If I'm not there for it specifically, then loudness and minimal work hand in hand. The more minimal the music is, the louder I can tolerate it.

I thought that was the case, but when I looked for a list of American Post-Punk bands, Cabaret Voltaire was listed. I shrugged, thought, “I must have been wrong all these years”, and without another thought added it to the list.
With humility, I bow to your superior knowledge.
Somewhere I had a list of original 80s and 90s Russian post punk bands that I wanted to explore, but I can’t find it.

Of those, I'd say Romeo Void are probably the only ones who qualify. Ministry used to be sad Pop before they went full-on Industrial Metal. The Cabs, apart from being British, were also Industrial, following the same trajectory as many Industrial bands into electronic music. The others would be either New Wave or Avant Garde/Experimental Rock. Of course, being New Wave or Avant Garde doesn't preclude you from also being Post Punk but Post Punk isn't the first genre I'd label them with.audiojunkie wrote: Wed Jan 31, 2024 3:59 pm There certainly aren’t as many post punk American bands. I'd loosely define Post Punk as music that isn't Goth but you could play at a Goth club without the little darlings running screaming from the venue.

Interesting. Tuxedomoon was always lumped in with Prog Rock shit in the record shop I used to go to, so I never bothered with them. Listening to a few things now, they are kind of like an American take on Eyeless in Gaza. Crash Course in Science is a bit too electronic for me to think of them as Post Punk. Also boring and repetitive.

Music style and preference has a lot to do with time/place/mood. There's music for driving, music for dancing, music for getting pumped up, music for relaxing/studying/focus, etc... What I listen to largely depends on what I'm doing, and where I'm doing it, and what mood I'm in. Don't feel bad about what you like. I have an 800+ song spotify playlist that I designed specifically for listening to while I'm at work, or when relaxing. It is composed of Dream Pop, Shoegaze, Indie, Trip Hop, Downtempo, Ethereal, Dub, Post Rock, etc... It's all lower tempo stuff that I like. I play it in the background and have it running all day at work, like a radio station on the over head of a bookstore. It's essentially Elevator music (Lift music), but it's bands that I personally like and respect. Do you, and don't worry about what anyone else thinks--life's too short. Enjoy your David Sylvian and Enigma, and a big middle finger to everyone who harasses you.

Tuxedomoon was frustratingly difficult to pin down. Every release I bought by them sounded completely different spanning from edgy, lo-fi garage, synth punk (circa 1979) to pretentious, jazz/neo-classical (circa 1986). Adding to the confusion, they kept switching up singers and did a lot of instrumentals with no vocals.BONES wrote: Fri Feb 02, 2024 12:16 pm Tuxedomoon was always lumped in with Prog Rock shit in the record shop I used to go to, so I never bothered with them. Crash Course in Science were totally obscure. They only put out one EP in 1981 which received no distribution. I found out about them recently on Spotify. I agree they are repetitive. I think a couple of tracks are great but most are pretty boring.
