I'd like to ask another question if you don't mind. Since KVRaudio is a store, do you think it would be welcomed to open a thread asking for ways to get the best plugin deals and where to look for them? I have seen some deals recently, that suprised me. I have enough plugins, but some deals are absolute nobrainers to me and I'd like to make sure I don't miss out on them in future, since I have never looked for deals before.

I bought Superior Drummer 3 in the current sale. I figured I'd hold off from using it for a while as my ssd is fairly full and needs reorganising. However, I see that parts 3 and 4 of the library have 'surround' in the name, though I don't understand what 'height surround' means, never having used surround sound. Is it correct to assume that those components of the library are only used for surround mixing, or are they in some way necessary for stereo mixes? At first glance it appears that I only need parts 1, 2, and 5 for stereo kits, is that correct? If so, it will only take up 130GB.

Me too. I just installed packs 1 and 2, and all the presets load fine with just those.

Incidentally, on the SD3 core library I've had a bit of a downer on it which it has taken me a long to realise is completely unreasonable. I think the vanilla kits are so... well, vanilla that it doesn't immediately excite in the same way as some of the expansions. When in a hurry I immediately start elsewhere. But recently I was digging in more and finding a whole wealth of treasures, there's absolutely brilliant stuff in there.

Another reason to not by the new €180 SDXs...

Yeah, I'm hoping that my personal mixing choices are enough to get a basic kit to do what I want, and to not be obviously identifiable as having an SD3 sound. I also want to avoid spending loads more money on add-on bits and pieces to tweak things.

Since SD-3 I have bought three newer expansions... (the older ones, of which i have many are not even close in quality imho) Decades, Legend of Rocks and Hitmaker... none of them I like as much as the SD-3 core library.

No, the sound library download is divided into 5 parts. The minimum install size is approximately 41 GB. Below are the specific downloads for the sound library. Sound library installations should be installed in order with one exception, the Additional Bleed Download. The Additional Bleed Download can be installed at any time after the Basic Sound Library (Download 1). This allows users to install the Basic Sound Library with all bleed in the minimum possible footprint.



Download 1: “Basic Sound Library” (All instruments, all tools and all articulations in close mics, OH Dyn and Amb Ribbon. Bleed in Snare Bottom (Kick and toms) , Approx. estimate 40gb)
Download 2: “Room Mics 1” (The rest of the Room mics: OH Cond, Amb Near, Amb Mid).
Download 3: “Room Mics 2 – Surround (5 ch)” (extra mics to achieve 5.0 surround, Front L/R, Center and Surround L/R)
Download 4: “Room Mics 3 – Height Surround (6 ch)” (extra mics to achieve 11.0 surround, Front Height, Rear Height and Rear Height Wide )
Bleed Download: “Extra Bleed” (The rest of the bleed in the close mics). This installation can be installed at anytime after the initial Basic Sound Library (Download 1).

Somewhat foolish; I avoided SD3 for years as I just didn't want that much space being hogged on my drive. If I'd known half of it was surround specific I'd have thought differently. First tests and it sounds great, very pleased. Now it's time to improve my understanding of real drum mixing.

The stuff post-Decades is very rarely on a big sale - maybe they've very rarely done 25% off or something? The older ones can be 40% or occasionally (BF etc) 60-70% off. Some of those are really good and worth getting.

I agree that they are waaaaay too expensive. I think I have something like 400 acoustic snare drums alone in my Toontrack arsenal. I just can't justify spending €180 on ANY drum library, no matter how good it is when I'm really happy with the variety and quality of what I've got. Enough people must buy them at that price though or else they'd be offering discounts. Good luck to 'em.

That's totally a matter of taste, which is why it's great to have all these choices. Personally I'm an Al Schmitt-guy all the way (at least when it comes to drums).

oh yeah, and for more than drums. his approach to vocals/eq has always been the one to shoot for

as far as SDXs, finally pulled the trigger on SD3 based on one of the newest expansions which has a DW kit recorded where i've done a number of sessions. and for once the TT demo clips didn't annoy me, looking forward to giving this a proper evaluation.
