Alternatives to Sonnox Inflator?

I have not. Emulating the Aroma flavours was simple but never exact. I paused work after requesting apShaper features on the apulSoft forum. As you know, the power of Aroma is to blend the four flavours to taste.

Would you be open to releasing them individually and then letting the end user blend them some other way? For example, Studio One allows users to create extended FX chains with splits, thus performing the exact function you requested from apulSoft. I believe Logic, Reason, and other DAW's have similar capabilities, plus DDMF, Blue Cat, and Nomad Factory have chainer plugins that do it.

Unfortunately FuncShaper hard clips at +3.5 dB pre-waveshaper. I don't know why this would be. I reported it in 2019.

Because of this you lose the nice asymptotic saturation of something like Tanh(x).

+12 dB Drive -> Tanh(x)
vs
Tanh(4x)
(Should be the same)



I'm also pretty sure it converts the curve you input into a lookup table instead of using it straight. This results in dirtier harmonics, quantization noise and more aliasing.

Yes and no. You'd still wind up with the spectral nastiness in the second image which comes from using a lookup table. You'd also have to make sure your input is under 3.5 dB even after using the drive control. You can't overdrive FuncShaper beyond that without unexpected results.

A better way to put this is the waveshaper curve is only valid for the displayed range of -1.5...+1.5 (3.5 dB = 1.5 amplitude). Whatever the waveshaper value is at +-1.5, that's what extends beyond.

My point is FuncShaper for me doesn't live up to its promise and these are the reasons I gave up on it.

yep you're right , somehow the drive input value clips the signal before it enters the shaping function

Looking at the GitHub, I think it is the same algorithms as the Reaper JS RC Inflator, but I'm not really sure. I'm considering picking up Sonnox Inflator (I've tried Melda Waveshaper, and having to manually change presets for the curve is not very intuitive), but if this is as close to it as people say the Reaper version is, I might just stick with this. On the other hand, I can't find as much info online about it as I expected, and I'm wondering if there's a reason for that (i.e. because it doesn't match up too well).

I like Puff Puff MixPass from Korneff Audio a lot lately. Though I have the Ox Inflator, also been using Kraftur from Soundtheory a lot. All of these are iLok of course, which is certainly, hated by many.

*Oh wait sry, Korneff has a prop alternative to iLok in some of their plugins (currently),
