Ah the usual "this is the year of Linux desktop" thread. Which never really happens.

Get this: majority of people will not care, and familiarity beats everything else.

Even hardcore Linux users cringe at that “year of the linux desktop” phrase.

The one good thing about getting old is that more and more, I care less and less what people people think of me. Teenagers would find it hard to imagine this since everything revolves around what their friends think, but it really is liberating to “NGAF”, raise my middle finger proudly in the air, and go on enjoying my Linux.

I share info about linux. I defend linux when people put it down without knowing what they are talking about (a pet peeve of mine—I know enough about the strengths and weaknesses of all the major operating systems to hold my ground when needed (secret: they all have pros and cons). I help people who need help or want to know more. I advocate for linux. But with all of that, I just really don’t care if there is a year of the linux desktop or not.

Linux is great! But, linux is not for everyone.

Linux has major issues with drivers for network adapters ...

That's more than 25 years that I use and work with Linux, notably in embedded network devices and never saw or heard about having major issues with network adapters (plural).

So I ask :

What problems with network adapters ? Which ones and what are the issues ?

I say you dont work with Wifi networks and with hardware using the latest generations of Wifi standards (wifi6, wifi6e and wifi7).

That is the case. The main focus is industrial, utilities, and in these cases Linux works very well.

And I rarely use wifi for my own use, apart when developing little things for fun with the Pico and Raspberry Pi microcontrollers.

As for laptops, if I'd have to get one, I'd look at Lenovo. There's a good history of running Linux on Lenovos - did it a few times - dating back to when they were IBM Thinkpads. I would also assess what I actually need and not fall for any advertisement hype pertaining to 'get the most recent because without it you can't do anything' type of thing.

Seriously though, I’ve been really excited with what’s been going on with Risc-V, myself! The world needs an open processor architecture. Redox OS has some really cool features that correct problems that came before. It has been well thought out. However, it is not nearly ready for use. Right now, it is command-line based only—and even with that it’s not ready. I’ll continue watching it percolate, and maybe in 10 years it might be usable. But it IS something to keep watching. The nice thing, is that, just like BSD, it can make use of a lot of the available source.

Cant get them playing together right after 10 years. Every now and then I try. Then back to stuff that works.

I am glad to see the progress and will continue to stick my head in the door.

I did manage to get Mulab up and running on wine....havent tested but progress none the less

Mint is a SOHO distro, and good in it's category. AVLinux is a musicians distro, that has wine, Reaper, and Yabridge plugin wrapper preinstalled in working order. Being debian/MX Linux, it is easy to change defaults. Pipewire is now the default AVLinux audio system, but you can install jackd and qjackctl if desired. Enlightenment is the AVLinux default desktop, but you can install xfce if desired. etc etc AVLinux is found at:

You might be interested that FocusRite audio interfaces now have excellent linux support. Often, a compatible audio interface with software support, is the missing element in a linux journey. Lots of FocusRite linux details:
