Softube CS-80 ? - Model 77 Dual Layer Synth

CS80 is overrated.

They need to emulate the JX3P next for Model 83. Now that's underrated! As for Model 81, I prefer the Polysix but wouldn't mind another Jupiter 8. For Model 85, either the Matrix 6 or 12 would be welcome.

I'm not at all impressed with the sound designers choices for the presets of this synth. This is the first synth from Softube that hasn't made me feel like I need it in my toolbox. The Model 80 and 84 sound much better to my ears then this one. I think the Arturia CS80 V4 will hold me over, I think the Arturia option sounds better. Personally I'd rather see Softube tackle the Alesis Andromeda or other boutique synths vs doing the same thing over and over.

That is how I feel too and this is the first one in the Model series that I won't buy.

It is a very limited and quirky synth with a very narrow sound palette and you really have to Love the sound of it or have fallen for the Hype that it is awesome because it was used in a few Movies.
I am pretty sure they would have used something else in those Movies if they had more to Choose from back then and you can easily get the same sounds or pretty close to it with a Oberheim Emulation.

Btw. How does the Model 80 Compare to your Rev4?

Fun fact: In 1993 You could get them for as low as $300 if you found the right seller.

Exactly, its a very good CS-x0 emu, but the chances are most people will have one already and you certainly don't need more than one! Late to the party and not really any better (to my ears) than what's already available...when its super cheep I may pick it up for the modules, but to be honest they really need to update the modular framework for that to be a pull...

I love the Model-84 - whenever I load up I feel like I'm playing an 80s Hardware synth - not getting that "playing hardware" vibe yet from this

even the Vangelis type brassy leads - I opened up Repro 5 - the "CS-Something" patch to compare - and that sounds more alive, and weighty - don't know how to describe it

will continue to demo as I'd like to purchase but not sold on it it yet

Yes, the Softube has an LFO (which is what the CS80 calls "Sub Oscillator"). It works just like the original, Softube just named it like what it is, to avoid confusion as people think a Sub Oscillator is something else, these days...

The CS80 is not a thick synth, unlike things like the SCI/Oberheim stuff, if that's what you are expecting. As said previously, the synth part of the CS80 is kinda weak, it's really the expressivity and physical/tactility of the hardware that was it's big win - which you don't really get with a plugin, unless you have a weighted poly aftertouch keybed...

Have you tried ME80 or Arminator?
