Image-Line was originally a video game development company that added FL Studio (originally called FruityLoops) to their product line as a sort of one-off thing. Their income at the time would have been derived primarily from the games they were selling, which is why they could get away with that policy (game companies don't normally charge for upgrades/patches to their games, they try to get you to buy new games instead, or to re-purchase the same games for a new platform in some cases, so their Lifetime Free Updates policy could almost be seen as an extension of the video game mentality).
