Sorry for the delay posting these sometimes life gets in the way. Anyway my tidying session turned into a tear everything down and move stuff around the room session and then I had to deal with an issue with my elderly dadswilow11 wrote: Mon Mar 03, 2025 4:05 amProbably this controller thing you've been mentioning. I'm trying to make my own setup more ergonomic but struggling for inspiration...
Anyway I don't have everything plugged back in but this will show the setup. Just imagine some colored lights
This is my FM setup. The entire thing is smaller than many large hardware synths, or mixing consoles. At the bottom left is my "things that generate sound" controls. Very easy to reach over with my left hand and adjust something with it. Right above that is the "envelope" section. Again everything is in easy reach. To the right of it is the modulation section, and to the right of that is the "things that you control while performing section and effects" again simple simple and would be right where you would expect things like the filter to go. What you don't see here is the QWERTY keyboard and mouse which is on a pull out drawer underneath
This is the setup for my VA/Subtractive style editing
The four controllers are set up the exact same way as my FM the difference here is I have a Launch Pad Pro MK3 as my way to play notes instead of a keyboard and have the Computer Keyboard on top.
Finally I have attached a picture from the front so you can see how the shelf I use makes it all work. I find the shelf elevating everything by a few inches is a big plus and allows you to have cables from your computer run underneath so you can have everything really tight
Also for those wondering why I would have multiple setups it's because I had expanded my setup to using 8 controllers but then changed it to two setups. I run a software called Audiogridder that networks all my computers together and sends MIDI and digital audio across the network. So I run a lot of plugins on these two that send audio to another setup which is based around a laptop that I can use for recording on Cubase which I also take out of the studio. I actually have 5 computers currently on this network as multiple DSP servers. I build desktop computers as a hobby and have upgraded my laptop so most of these are older computers. With Audiogridder each instance on each machine gets a dedicated core so you can run CPU intensive plugins like DIVA
If anyone has any questions feel free to ask, I have explained on detail earlier on this thread how they all work
Also this is link for that shelf if you want one. It has two wings on the sides that swivel

80s Arena C&W, what will they think of next!?! And here was me thinking Yes were kinda cool.
Seriously, you have to change the set-up for different synths? f**k me, like life isn't complicated enough already. Imagine if you had to change to a different mouse for different types of plugins, you'd go f**king mad.IvyBirds wrote: Mon Mar 10, 2025 10:21 pmThis is my FM setup...

Ahhhh nope. I have all the plugins I care about installed on every computer as well as having Cubase installed on every computer. If I go into my home studio and want to work on FM I have a desk for that. If I want to work on VA or Wavetable I have a desk for that. If I want to work on sequencing I have a desk for that. If I want to practice my playing on something other then the piano in my living room I can do that also, if I want to play video games on my Atari 2600, or PlayStation 5 I can do that, if I just want to sit in a comfy chair and watch the game while drinking a beer I can do that. If I want to set up my system to have a nice generative ambient piece going while I get high with an edible or two I can do that also (it's legal in my state). If I want to work on photos or video editing I have a desk for thatBONES wrote: Tue Mar 11, 2025 12:50 am80s Arena C&W, what will they think of next!?! Each Station has different chairs which helps my 50 something back. I also can look out the window at one station or at my giant TV on another that I stream ISS live streams from so it looks like a window to space I can do that also
10-15 years ago this room was filled with hardware synths then and now it's my refuge and sanctuary
To recap my system has triple redundancy. If something goes down it's no issue. Everything talks to everything. Everything is connected to the same server for storage of a common sample library, presets, and DAW files and recordings. If I am working on say an FM patch and I need a break or want to work on something else I can do that right from that workstation or move positions and work on something else with a different view and chair which puts me on a different mindset, or I can sit in my loveseat and watch TV and do nothing music related
In my four decades of home studios setups this by far the most inspiring, productive, and relaxing setup I have ever had

I'd probably still be using my ibook G4 800 with Logic 5/6 if it hadn't died. All of my plugins would continue to work fine and sound great. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It was a hardware instrument that should have lasted. Unfortunately, my cat, Pierre, had other ideas about it...

I started on Logic 5 with a PowerBook G4 550Mhz. I now have a MacBook Air M1 and it's ~165x faster! So, why is my music not proportionally better?

Oh right, so all you have to do is get up and move to another part of the f**king room! That's never going break your train of thought or ruin the moment you were in, is it? Honestly, you looked less demented before you explained this. I mean, you're obviously so caught up in this stupidity that it wouldn't even occur to you to just have one chair and roll it around the room to the next computer, which is only useful for doing one stupid thing. It's like taking every advantage of working ITB and throwing it off a cliff into the ocean but you can't see that at all, can you? Does having a room full of computers make you feel special or something? It seems like a special kind of sad to me.IvyBirds wrote: Tue Mar 11, 2025 1:45 amIf I go into my home studio and want to work on FM I have a desk for that. What happens if you are working at the station by the window and you need to watch the telly, does your tiny mind explode? Each Station has different chairs which helps my 50 something back. From what, exactly?10-15 years ago this room was filled with hardware synths then and now it's my refuge and sanctuary
I prefer just having a system that's reliable, which I've managed pretty much the whole of the last couple of decades. You seem to be more into adding as many possible points of failure as you can jam into a single room. Honestly, I'd be more than embarrassed at such profligacy, I'd be deeply and thoroughly ashamed of myself. To recap my system has triple redundancy. If something goes down it's no issue.
You need a break from a five minute job? That's some short attention span, buddy. If I am working on say an FM patch and I need a break
My inspiration is always right in front of me, I don't need a special room or a special set-up to fire it up, it's there or it's not. In our liner notes we have a name for the "studio" where we produce it all but that's really just a made-up thing because it feels like we should have somewhere like that. In reality, though, it's just my salon (which is what you call the main cabin on a boat). It's where I watch TV, listen to music, get dressed, cook and eat my meals and do pretty much everything else you do in a home. But I'm able to work just as effectively on the bus, in the park, at the beach or 5,000 miles away in a hotel room. That's what makes working ITB so much better but you've just swapped an unwieldy and fragile hardware set-up for something even more unwieldy and more fragile. It's like you revel in having the worst of both worlds. In my four decades of home studios setups this by far the most inspiring, productive, and relaxing setup I have ever had

I get the fact that you are trying to get banned again but what part of I have my DAW and every plugin I care about on every computer do you not understand?BONES wrote: Tue Mar 11, 2025 3:17 amOh right, so all you have to do is get up and move to another part of the f**king room! i get up and move because my back demands it. It's what happens when you get old and have been in two car accidents. I certainly don't have to.
But hey if you think that makes me demented because I have a physical limitation awesome, let me see if I care........nope I don't. In fact I will wear it as a badge of honor
I enjoy making sounds and don't care about trying to make the East German Industrial Chart as a Nine Inch Nails ripoff band but hey you do you

Just have to laugh this, as it shows a basic lack of logic and reasonBONES wrote: Tue Mar 11, 2025 3:17 am

What point of failure do I have in my system exactly. Can you even explain your logic in saying that a redundant system that eliminates points of failure is somehow causing them? For you if your single computer goes down what happens? For me I would move to the next desk
I don't have any single points of failure

Bones cut the insults, Christ you’ve been given more lives than a cat. It’s tiresome having you shit in every punch bowl. You can make a point without the manufactured edginess. Give it a break.
