No.
The entire point of this thread is that the design of much software distracts us from a “given” task.

No, software can make the problem worse by exploiting the symptom, like social media.

Software detox, just like social media detox.
Because they are two forms of the same problem.

there is no physical addiction here, its just a habit. habits can be broken, if you have the will.
do you have the will?

That is a problem in their design, or more bluntly a “design feature.”
Sure, when we recognise that software & social media are two forms of that problem, we need to walk away.

Software hoarding is not the worst addiction. I feel sorry for the hardware hoarders who spend 10x the money software hoarders spend and then they need to rent or buy a 4 bedroom house, just to store those things. They constantly need to work and maintain the setup, fix audio issues and constantly in worry of fire, losing value or not spending enough time with their equipment.
Software hoarding can be as cheap as skipping a restaurant visit once a month and by comparing and evaluating software you get to the point within 2-3 years that only 1-2 things are missing from your collection.
Like me, I only need the following things now:
- Serum 2
- Avenger 2 (have the 1.
- Musiclab 4 bundle
- Overloud Thu Premium
Last 2 years with startegic software collection I got to the point that nothing else is missing from my sound palette i.e. my collection is complete.
What would make your collection complete in your opinion? (when you no longer feel the need to hoard)?

I suppose the difficult thing with music is that much of it ages very quickly, so anything novel and unique can be a selling point, which is part of the reason new plugins can be so fascinating. The truthpill being, of-course, that you really don't need a bunch of new plugins to come up with a new idea. It might just be easier is all. DJ S3RL was on a live podcast back in the early 2000s (when digital sidechain compression was all the rage) and when asked about it, he mistakenly started to describe normal compression applied to select drum sounds; that podcast is hard to find now. I'm pretty sure he was just automating volume ducking at the time and nobody even knew the difference. Composition can always outdo newfangled effects, no matter how novel at the time.

Physical dependence is not the same as addiction. And addictive behavior is not merely a habit that can be broken with "willpower." It's those types of ignorant, morally superior attitudes that keep people from getting the help they need to overcome their addictions.vurt wrote: Wed Apr 02, 2025 8:01 pmyes, a lack of will, on the sufferers part.Michael L wrote: Wed Apr 02, 2025 7:57 pm

You should educate yourself. There are only 100 years of addiction medicine to draw from.
