ya'know...

if you are really so very bored of reading all these tedious Tracktion threads, why not try keeping the f**k out of the Tracktion forum?

Do you log on to LoopTalk and make snide comments that everyone spends all their time talking about Fruity too?

Man, I would love it if there were a $50 1.6 upgrade path. I hope that turns out to be prophetic. I'm debating the value in upgrading while waiting for all the features to be announced etc. I've just spent so much in the last 2 years on gear and software, I'm a easy sell most of the time and am working hard to stop myself from buying more than I need.

Hey Jules, some of us here are on tight budgets. Please be kind on the upgrade price! That alone may determine if some of us upgrade.

I remember when Live 4 was announced and T2 was still a long way off. A lot of people was talking about how they were going to switch to Live because it would solve all the problems they had with Tracktion.

Now T2 is around the corner, and I have started seeing posts about how Live 4 has this or that problem, and some of them are switching hosts, e.g. (back) to T2.

Nowadays I am struggling to limit myself. There is simply too much choice, both regarding hosts and instruments. I genuinely feel it is crippling my level of creativity. Instead of digging in to a select few tools, I spend time drooling over the hot new thing.

When I started making music I had Scream Tracker and a few 8 bit samples. It was all about pushing the envelope, studying other peoples techniques and improving your own (I remember one track where the composer made clever use of pattern commands to make the patterns play backwards. pointless, but fun).I was more productive then than now.

I'm glad I've stuck with Tracktion even though it has some issues.

Me, too. When I bought T1, I knew I was in for the long haul.

I feel the same way Bp, I've got too many things that Iknow too little about, I've recently switched to mac for audio work and intend to use a minimal set of apps for future projects.

I've got the TRacktion NFR release and love it. If T2 is as streamlined I would happily pay fuul price to have it as the basis for my new setup:

{Tracktion, Albino2, RMiv, Nitro, Waves renaissance, Yamaha flute, Tibetan singing bowls, Rode NT1}

Do Tibetan singing bowls run on Mac?

I agree about the "less is more" philosophy. I was one of those who said 6 months ago I would no bother with Live 4 and simply wait for T2... unfortunately I was drawn in by the hype, got very disappointed in the process (big problems for my in Live 4) and now wish I'd done as Breakpete did. Still I think T2 will be great, and I'm fully back on board.

The same applies with plug-ins - I recently had a major cull and only have a few left - just the ones I actually use/need. Why clog up your hard drive with stuff you never use?

Post

I totally agree. My problem is that there are 4 categories: a) stuff I definitely use a lot b) stuff I don't use a lot, but bust out sometimes, c) stuff I really REALLY intend on using, and d) stuff I clearly don't need.

After ditching the plugs in category d), I'm still left with too many. :D I need to ditch c) too, but you just KNOW that when you do, you'll end up re-installing a week later. ;)

Yes, there are always some synths I just keep around because sooner or later I might use them.

I have:

VSTi: Pro-53, z3ta+, DR-008, Tau2, JunoX2, Vanguard Lite, Slayer v1, Sampletank LE, and eJ
VST: Akai DC Vocoder, Pro-53 & z3ta+ fx versions, mDrive (comes with Tau 2)

Of the VSTi, I've only regularly used Pro-53, z3ta+, DR-008 and Tau2.
As for VST, I seldom use the Akai. Mostly, I use the free Kjaerhus Audio effects, and some CM effects.

The only thing I really lack is a sampler, but I'm hoping T2 will take care of this in an OK fashion. I have Orion, which has a good sampler, but I don't bother with ReWire much.

I should cut down to the bone. Leave out everything but the regulars, and just keep the install/zip files around just in case.

Breakpete - sounding fairly lean already 8)

I've heard Orion recommended and I believe it's similar to Reason in some ways. Reason has instruments/samplers/drum synth covered, though the only effect I really use much is the wonderful RV7000 reverb and the Scream 4 distortion. That may well change when MClass is added...

So I take more interest in effects... I think these are actually responsible for what your track will ultimately sound like anyway. Even with effects though there's no point in haing more than you need, and once you have the basics well covered, there's just the occasional extreme effect that's worth a good look 8) (currently tempted by PSP Nitro, or possible Quadfromage;...also Izotope Spectron and Trash... oh sod it!)

...back from cleaning out my VST directory :-) Got rid of some free plugins and little used synths.

Now I'm down to:

Pro-53, z3ta+, DR-008, Tau2 and eJ.
FX: Akai DC Vocoder, Kjaerhus Audio free effects, Frohmage, Ohmygod and CM Vocoder.

I know it's nothing compared to what a lot of KVRians have/use.

headquest: Orion is a fine piece of software. It is incredibly easy to pick up and use, and has some powerful generators. The Sampler, Drums generator and WaspXT are elements I really miss when using other hosts. It has a great variety of useful effects.

That said, I'm not quite comfortable with the workflow. Some of the generators are of little or no use to me, as are some effects. Part of the reason why I got Tracktion was because I could have only the tools I want to use visible to me. Everything else just becomes a distraction. I also like working around the arrangement as opposed to around a mixer.

Reason seems great and I have demoed it for a long time. If it wasn't for the price, which I think is way too high compared to other soft studios, I might have bought it.

Oh, and I want Nitro too. :-)

yes, but if played too vigourously they fall off and land on the key board
