How else would you do it? :?

Tracktion's automation rocks btw..

Tip: add another Vol / Pan filter to your track. Now you can automate the first (drag the little A symbol over to it) and leave the second for normal mixing duties.. 8)

i don't know what your problem with using the automation is?

the automation lines are the 'track splines' you're looking for, altho they are line based and don't do curves.

drag the 'A' square (top right hand corner of the track in the arrange view, just left of the filters) onto the volume/pan control. you'll have an editable line with which you can change the level over the course of the track. if it's too coarse a snap to edit with, as usual with tracktion, just zoom in to get more precise.

also, if you want to keep your current automation, but lower/raise the overall level, simply add another vol/pan filter afterwards. you could automate that too if you liked.

i'm sorry if this seems to be ignoring your request to not suggest automation, but i can't understand what else you might be talking about! :D perhaps you mean 'at different times through the CLIPS?'. in which case, this isn't something that can really be done in T1, but you can copy and paste automation data around the track by using the I/O markers to select a region. just make sure you have the automation line selected and you can click the copy/paste buttons in the properties panel.
Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.

With level/pan splines through each track,a midi controller would be nice for automating fades ,but I don't got.
If you do try fades with a mouse and it doesn't happen smoothly or its faded down too far ,how would you go back and fix that?
Just new to it so I may be missing obvious things

exactly!! all of my misguided music is done this way...

Each track has a little "A" icon top right. Drag this to the filter you want to automate (or who's automation you want to edit) and choose the parameter from the list. The automation will then appear as lines & breakpoints, and can be easily edited.

You don't have to edit this on the same track either.. create a new empty track if that will make things easier.

yeah, that's something that the T2 wishlist has been singing for... the automation system is fine but the lines you draw don't move with the clips.

like i said tho, you can get around this by copying and pasting the automation lines separately to clip movements/copies. a hassle, true, but the only real workaround atm.

Got it :) had the volume filter in the wrong place, had to be just before the meters and read automation on,,
thats workable, even without a curved line.
thanx alot guys :D

You can record the automation live by selecting the small a near the transport buttons.

Play the track and tweak the track volume how you want and it will be recorded.

You can undo and re-record if you don't get it the way you want the first time.

You could, if you want sudden changes in volume, also cut your clip where you want the change. Then you could change the gain on the clip itself.

I like the automation route better though.

getting along quite well with the lines,,feel kinda stupid now
I'm gunna try bringin 10 tracks from Orion in and fade like crazy.
I'll make changes in the piece by bringing different instruments in and out,,,
never really learned structure that well...

Thats probably how I would do it. I like it better bacuase it goes with the clip if I need to move it. And you can choose what type of fade you want.
