I tried all of the mentioned plugins here, but some aren't mentioned with a variety of headphones from $150 to $3000.
For me and my experience, there is no contest there. Realphones provides the most convincing simulation and translation to other environments. All of these free, affordable, or expensive solutions can not replace Realphones.

I started with VSX when it came out and have since tried Can Opener and last week Realphones.
Can Opener I don't get at all. Changed the balance of my cans in an unpleasant way and struck me as 'phasey' sounding.
On paper, Realphones is an incredibly attractive proposition. In practice, I found it ok/fine/not great, especially in relation to VSX.
I don't like the VSX headphones (cheap, cans barely cover my ears) but the ecosystem IMO is a hands down more realistic experience vs the competitors. The rooms have a lot more variation compared to Realphones, which IMO suffers from a lot of 'sameness' across environments. The Club and Car models are stellar, the Zuma room is a very natural frequency curve with just enough room to give a sense of air without coming off as 'phasey', so a good room to work in.
Main downside, aside from the cans, is the cost. It's obviously the most expensive investment, so possible customers need to determine if the additional value is there

just trying the latest version of CanOpener in conjunction with Morphit and am getting really good results running the Mix Engineer Lifelike preset into the Morphit correction.
I prefer this over Morphits own crosstalk or virtualize options. But it's cool that Morphit now offers these in the box.

I compared it with VHS, Morphit and Sonarworks. All sounded same to my ear which is a good thing. The correction profile for my headphone looks same in all too. It's just MMatcher have more functionalities.

SoundID with room.
Canopener has been asking me to log in randomly and that’s just annoying so I stopped using it.
If I finished more tracks or get around to mixing my 3 song ep, I’ll get RIME for my NDH30s. It adds 10ms latency so isn’t for tracking.

Same here, and it doesn't warn. Only opening my monitoring fx chain made me figure it out. Directly uninstalled, I need consistency.vitocorleone123 wrote: Sun Jun 01, 2025 3:59 pm Canopener has been asking me to log in randomly and that’s just annoying so I stopped using it.
What a surprise Melda released a Morphit alternative. Instant purchase (on sale 19€ instead of 99), I love Melda plugins. For can opening, curently I get back to Airwindows Monitoring

I am looking for something to add crossfeed to my setup. I have SoundSource and I use it with custom EQ profiles and/or Pro-Q. So I'm covered for EQ. Is Morphit the best solution? I've been surprisingly unable to find a free or cheap AU just for crossfeed. I'd like to get something similar to what my old HeadRoom amp had.

Choose the "consolidated plugin" in AU format it you wish (personaly I use clap), and the "setting", or plugin in the plugin" Monitoring, comes with several crossfeed option. I use Cans A and Cans B

Morphit works great for me and crossfeed is available in the plugin as well.
First and foremost: We need great songs (again)

Thanks, I hadn't tried that. I have to use AU because I'm using it in SoundSource.robisme wrote: Sat Jun 21, 2025 9:19 am There is one and it's free : https://www.airwindows.com/

I just don't like what CansA through D do to the sound. I used a track with '60s style separation (Simon & Garfunkel's "America") and a lot of the bass disappeared, maybe because it's panned. It just sounded lackluster.
Incidentally, I don't like what Morphit does with it either. I would prefer to disable the headphone EQ completely since I've already have the correction loaded in Pro-Q. The old HeadRoom amp I used to have did give a bit of a boost in warmth but it mostly narrowed the stereo field in a pleasing way. It seems so simple but I haven't found a digital tool that replicates it yet.

I found a new free one I'm going to try. Saw it on a best new VST YT vid. It's called Crossfeed and I haven't looked up the dev yet. It simulates room speakers in your headphones. Looks interesting.

Current favorite of mine; Waves nx for eq correction, morphit for crossfeed.
