So did the original which it emulates (pardon the pun)

What you describe is inherent in the DPCM Mu-255 companding that is utilized in both the original hardware and the Arturia where 13-14 bits of data can be stored in 8 bits of storage.

That μ-law non-linear quantization however comes at the cost of reduced peak levels and reduction in the perception of transients

This wasn't an issue for the original with its short sample times with things like drum samples as it could easily be corrected with envelopes but is harder to do with long sample lengths and extended playback of them using ADSR envelopes

Usually however when people make pads and drones which was the context of my response those things don't have prominent transients anyway so it's a non factor
That's very interesting! I reported this bug to Arturia 2 years ago. :) They didn't say me that. Seems like their support is not educated or informed.

Could you give more details about this, please:
"it could easily be corrected with envelopes"

I'm not sure how? No matter what I do, the kick will loose the transient anyway. Not a big deal, I would use any other sampler for that, but still....

First thing would be to make sure the sample is trimmed right up to the start of the kick and from there adjust the envelope as good as you can

From there do what we did in the 1980s and adult it further with outboard. I HIGHLY recommend the SPL Transient Designer which is based off the original hardware. It's on a really good sale now also

You can also try things like parallel compression techniques

One other trick for kicks is to trim the sample in your DAW so that is just the transient and nothing else and layer that sample with the first sample so it plays both of them at the same time

Those are all things we used to do back in the day.

Anyone else think that Pigments would be improved by 8 macros instead of 4?

Any opinions/observations on the Modal engine?

I'm curious if anyone knows what the process is in the shaper section (the drop down menus for Timbre and form. EQ, convolution?

Sure but then again you can use tools like Gig Performer, and many DAWs to add as many as you want

Not sure if this helps, but in the manual it mentions this about various Forms:
“…each option is a different pair of “masks,” or overlays in which some harmonics are completely muted and others are allowed to pass. The Morph knob then crossfades smoothly between one mask and another.”

Thanks, i read that (i like reading manuals), but, i'm wondering exactly how that is implemented and i can screw with it somehow.

Probably not the best place to ask fro neutral opinion, but if you have to choose between Serum2 and Pigments as additional synth (not main workhorse) which to give you extra flavour and character to mix, which you prefer?
Hard to me to decide, test them both, like them both...probably will buy them both, just used to play with other synths and don't have time to dig deeper now,so curious if somebody have both, how you evaluate them side by side???

They are both great and complement each other perfectly, I strongly suggest to try getting them "2nd hand" (I got serum 2 as a gift for around 100$ and Pigments for around 70$).

Pigments has had free updates for years, and hopefully that trend continues. :) I’d wait for a sale and get it. But if GAS takes over, you may “need” both.

Post

I would pick Pigments - it still has a broader range of sounds with more synthesis types and I find it easier to setup for MPE

Post

Probably first will buy Pigments, because of the price :)
Then Serum2...
Most weakest point of Pigments is not very convincing demos www,so to create that 'i want it badly ' feeling, from my point of view :):):)

Both of them are very similar, feature and soundwise. What I like about Pigments is that you never need to read the manual, it's UI is very logical and intuitive. It's great if you use it occasionally. When working with Falcon or Zebra you very often has to look for the manual and if you don't use it regularly you have to relearn it. Serum is somewhat between Pigments and Falcon, not as straight forward as Pigments.

I have both and would for sure pick Serum 2. IMO better sound quality overall, has the spectral mode, and I find it better for MPE as it has per modulation curves like equator (very rare).

Serum 2 just sounds great! Pigments does some a few unique features though. Personally, I say get them both.
Pigments Presets, Omnisphere Expansions, Dune, Serum, and Thorn Sound Packs. Diva, Zebra, TAL, and Repro Sound Banks. Massive discounts - https://NewLoops.com

Depend on how much you like serum 1. If I could only have 1 I would go for Pigments.
Don't F**K with Mr. Zero.

I wasn't into Serum 1. Had Pigments for a long time. Serum 2 is a different story and just got that recently.
