I'd say most of the crying comes from sycophants who can't stand it when the facts are presented to them.

Vital is not a "free synth" it is a commercial synth with a free tier and that was Matt's biggest mistake. He made the free tier just as featured as the Plus and Pro versions.

For the record if I'm posting here it's because I'm taking a break from working with a synth that makes Vital look like a children's toy (maybe that's the appeal to some, it's on their level :P ).

But all joking aside, Vital had potential to be a top level synth but the lack of development has seen it slip further and further into obscurity. Development of other synths in the niche has not stagnated.

For people who are broke Vital remains a viable option but for those who can afford synths that are more powerful and still supported then to me it's not something worth spending time with and apparently the developer agrees.

If brought back to life it could once again become relevant but there is no indication that it still has a pulse. It's open source so maybe the Surge Synth Team would be better equipped, motivated, and skilled to take the project further.

Ok I'm going to go back and work with a synth aimed at grown ups now.......

Vital had always 100% been a free synth. When you buy the Plus and Pro versions you are paying for more Wavetables and Presets and with the pro you got unlimited text to wave table support

But the free version has always included the entire synth engine with no limitations, it just came with 75 presets instead of 250 and 400+ for the other versions, and 25 wavetables instead of 70 and 150

It's totally incorrect to claim that Vital is not a free synth, and there has never been a free stripped down version of it like so many other plugins have

Now you can claim and argue all day long if that pricing structure was the right call or not. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. I don't know nor do I care.

In the end it has always come down to if you want the extra content for the synth, and if you want to support the developer financially or not

Perhaps you are overdoing it with the Vital saga.
I paid my "little", "insignificant", "voluntary" investment in the synth and subscribed for the "Things to come"...
Moving on is a healthy thing most of the time.

Carry on. At least you are more consistent than Matt on the subject! :hihi:

jrwaltb wrote: Sat Aug 16, 2025 12:06 am The problem is that we are still talking about a dead project, who gives a f**k what happens to Vital? He made his money, I guarantee he will not produce something better than Serum 2 as no one trusts him anymore so why bother making anything. I don't knock him or anyone who uses Vital, lets just stop talking about it.
Okay jrwaltb. Let me know what can be spoken about and I will make sure everyone on earth understands your requirements. Thank you for this.
Lol. He ripped people off and practiced deceptive marketing techniques and your giving him free advertising. At least you got your free synth I guess.
Lol, I paid for it.

I dgaf about your opinion on Vital. I just thought your injunction against simply discussing it was amazingly silly.

No, it has not. There is a free tier but it's a commercial synth which is why payment is accepted for the other tiers. It has nothing to do with features or content.

I paid for the early access version before there was a free tier so no, it has not always "been free".

You're simply being pedantic. At any rate that's the attitude which killed Vital. "Hey everybody Vital is Free!!!!".

Yeah well guess what, now it's dead so good job.

I'm moving on now, you guys can keep genuflecting at the feet of someone who cares nothing about you if that gives you purpose.

I'll keep checking back periodically but I have very little faith that Vital will be resurrected at this point.

Why such bad faith comments? Who here is expressing some sort of blind adoration for the developer of a synth? You actually have a valid point but it gets murky when you make such silly exaggerations so often. You can just state your viewpoint and let the cards fall as they may but instead have to go on the offensive. Its ludicrous.

Oh, that irks me. Almost as bad as that guy who had his The Mangle plugin for sale--even though you couldn't download it--and he never responded to emails, even with his store still going.
Doing nothing is only fun when you have something you are supposed to do.

Isn't the vital subscription just rent to own?

Again the full regular release of Vital has always been free

Again you could always get the regular full version of vital with every feature of the synth 100% for free. That was always the business model

Some people paid for a special "prerelese" or early access version, some people paid for extra presets and Wavetables, however the synth itself since it's actual release to the general public has always been 100%

Anyone who suggests that the SYNTH ITSELF has not always been 100% is simply not being honest

Very true.

He’s got a weird, undeserved superiority complex.

(To be clear, he knows synths and his subjective opinions are no less valid than anyone else — it’s the framing that’s askew.)

My free Vital is great. I would be pissed off if I had paid into the premium tier though.

Actually Vital isn't dead...
I'm on the official discord server and the same debate was there. At some point even matt dropped by. Alittle bit later someone pointed at the github - as it seems there are multiple new entries there under graphics. It seems that Matt is working on a new visual framework. But I agree that it's annoying to not hear anything officially...

No, the synth is free. What is in the paid tiers and subscription is other things like presets, skins, access to the text to wavetable service. Specific to subscription is early access to new features and updates. As there haven't been either for a long time, that would call into question the value of subscribing.

I guess it's semantics but i'd argue having the text-to-wavetable limited to a few words a day means you're not getting the full package for free. Paying for pro(?) and having unlimited TTW is 100% functionality.
