So, are you going to buy a Mackie mixer/control surface?

I can't see why not. :? according the specs given on the featrues list it is just a standard CC to automation map. Any keyboard that throws out MIDI CC from its' knobs, and most do, will be cool.

Yeah I hope so. At present the Yamaha behaves in a normal full-on GM way. Use the mod wheel and it works as it should over MIDI. It would be interesting though to remap some of the functionality. It's a £1200 keyboard with very good specs for that kind of instrument, and as well as standard MIDI in/out it has USB MIDI which cuts down on leads and possibly latency.

Having said that I do a whole lot of my MIDI stuff directly in the piano roll, and even more still using standard notation in Sibelius, which I then transfer into other apps. So for example I will score out some loops and then use Reason/Audition to turn them into wild audio takes 8)

I dont think I'm really a control surface type of guy. Controlling volume faders with a big control surface just seems like more trouble than its worth to me. I do need my Akai MPD-16 and my midi keyboard tho.

But I really wish I could control everything else with my mind. Mackie needs to make some type of brain wave interface so I can move faders with my thoughts. Then I wouldnt have to use my arms.

it depends how much hassle it is to set up. I imagine that'd be a big advantage of the mackie stuff, cos it should integrate pretty seamlessly.

No doubt. If I did get a controller it would be a Mackie one. They look very cool anyways. 8)

I really like setting up my little Oxygen8 to control synth filters etc. It brings me back to my first synth, a Roland SH101 you could strap on like a guitar. Damn, that was pretty geeky. But I loved that synth, and I'd love to free up those knobs by having another surface just to use as a mixer.

I don't see a need for it.
I try to keep everything as simple as possible and the rest in the virtual domain.

1 midi input
1 mono audio input
1 stereo output.
That's it!

I dissabled all the rest.
Once I did this everything was running much smoother.
It also allowed me to get down to 1.4ms latency.

I also diabled all other not needed inputs like USB, Firewire, serial and parralel ports.
This left me with more IRQ's and overall better running system.

I have an EZbus. Im really hopeing I can use the transport and faders etc ( I can use some of it now with Bomes translator) I want to add a Behringer BCA2000 so i can get 8 tracks into my laptop via ADAT optical. If that works I wont be wanting the Mackie controler.

We will see.

yes, I'm about to get a Mackie Onyx 1640 mixer with the firewire card. I'm very excited as i will be opening a little demo studio in the building where I give guitar lessons. This Mackie looks like all I'll ever need to record full bands, rap groups, bluegrass ensembles, live shows, and whatever else comes up.

I'd love one, but it doesn't fit into my current budget as a hobbyist. A control surface is pretty far down my list, but I anticipate it'll be something quite budget... if I get a J-Station, I'll make myself happy with the 6 knobs. Otherwise there are a few other fairly cheap controllers I'll be looking at first.

If I had even just a regular full-time permanent teaching post, though, that'd change my plans and I'd probably just 'save up' for the Mackie. They look the biz.

Actually brain controlled things might not be in the too far future, i heard on the radio that they hooked up a monkey to some screen thing that monitored brain waves and trained the monkey so he could move a dot around on a screen...

I am using a BCF2000 although I haven't tried the Mackie control emulation yet. Already something that I am using heavily for mixing. Haven't started using for VST automation yet.

Thats dope. If a monkey can move a dot, my superior humanoid brain should be able to move a mouse cursor and some faders. 8)
