Politely will disagree here. So what if you think you own the software, but now time has proceeded on and it will no longer function, but hey! You own it! And good for you! :hihi: :hihi:
If "time has proceeded on and it will no longer function" in Windows, then I just run it in WINE on Linux and continue to use the software as if nothing changed. :D
Understood, but what I wundered about in an earlier thread was... if Microsoft wanted to disrupt WINE, they probably could?

At any rate, WINE is an emulation and I ain't going for it. There is an old saying in life...that if something is worth doing, then it is worth doing well. :hihi: :tu: :hihi: :tu:

That should include writing native apps for Linux.

Also, why the fuss about subscriptions? My position is clear and really simple. It is based on the fact that the software user is a trustworthy person, as also must the software provider be, as well. Then a subscription model should "just work". Just pay up and be current, no fuss!

No. It is entirely legal. WINE is not an emulation. It’s much better—and much faster as well. WINE actually translates WIndows API calls into POSIX calls on the fly, nearly as fast as native Linux applications. It’s not perfect of course. That’s because everything is done legally. There is no Microsoft code in WINE at all. And it has been developed in part through clean room reverse engineering. Microsoft can’t do anything about it. 🙂

I agree that native apps are better, but you were talking about being able to run Windows programs after they stop working on Windows. 🙂
Vendor‑Dependent Copy Protection: Customers lose. Pirates win.
(Also: I'm Accused of lying about Linux—it boots, runs my pro audio workflow, stays stable, updates--though yearly dismissed as “niche”. Yet I'm the deluded one.)

Alright, I remain open minded about WINE, but will be focusing on native stuff.

Well, yes...but I think I am more interested in a current, modern system, which is why I am so supportive of subscriptions. :hihi:

Modern processor, mother board, fast RAM, latest OS...and all that jazz!!!

Missed this in the namm videos. Is it in this thread already? Seems, uh, relevant.

It's been mentioned to many times in here that there is even a dedicated thread now:

The shake up of NI should serve as a wake up that the overriding factor is to invest in the skills and the process of creating and producing music and NOT in the tools...

A solid skill set and a general workflow is transferrable and different tools can be substituted to achieve the overall objective....

Just like mama said...

"Don't put all of your eggs in one basket son"...

Especially when a private equity company has taken over the hen house
I can only agree in your point, obviously, I subscribe to "multiple baskets", (as mentioned in another post), and I gradually moved to UVI, Arturia EastWest, Halion/Absolute, starting
already 10-12 years back, when NI started their deroute, as its been downhill for many years

However your point dont contradict my point, of wich I added the full context in red

Both is true, and well worth to learn from

My fail was being to naive and still upgrade Komplete as late as ver 15 :nutter:

But even worse, is the amount of 3-party kontakt instruments that has summed up,
despite the multiple baskets

I can live without the effects, got far better alternatives than NI, but there is certain
kontakt instruments that I need to autosample as I move on, and change workflow a bit,
and stop adding further kontakt-instruments

If and when Brainworx ceases to exist or Reaktor is discontinued because of this, people who have been paying for a Plugin Alliance subscription or Native Instruments 360 will lose access to their plugins, as if they never owned them, which also means they will lose access to all of the projects they've used any of those plugins on and work they've done over the years.

We as a community need to take this as a wakeup call and boycott all subscription plans, and let audio developers know that if they want our money, they must provide perpetual licenses that will live on, even after they no longer do.
If and when Native Instruments goes under people like me who paid for and own Komplete lose access to their plugins, as if they never owned them, which also means they will lose access to all of the projects they've used any of those plugins on and work they've done over the years.

If I can't buy a new computer and install Komplete that's a problem as I have lost access to my plugins.

This is a major issue that effects everyone not just subscriptions

Subscriptions can actually help mitigate this risk, because instead of dropping many hundreds or even thousands on plugins you can loose access to despite "owning them" you can rent them from month to month, and pause or cancel at will

Save the stems, save the MIDI, and Autosample your presets
THIS is the shituation, to the boone, subscription sücks, but an important monopoliced format based on Challenge Response, that fails to be solid, is almost as bad as Subscription in the long run, it just gives you a little extra time to sort out the mess. (As long as you current
computer dont break down, or is lost in other ways, that is)

Wake-up time ,... sure

As for Izotope, and Plugin Alliance, save the installers, and save licenses to iLok/USB, in orde
to protect what you paid for, it should still be possible as we speak

NI's own stuff is not possible to future-proof, just stop support it, find alternatives, and make
autosamples of the few most important instruments, needed be,..

There is good alternatives to most things

I remember a thread about alternatives to Waves, when they tryed to force subscription :-)

Maybe a seperate thread with alternatives to NI is being called for also :-)

I am all about developing skills. As others have said here, software can come & go, it is a tool.

I am totally grateful for the advent of the personal computer and will admit that candidly...

But also, everybody seems to have access to the same beatz, kind of a bummer....

Well, maybe how you look at it makes the story.

It's to simplistic to just say software is a tool learn skills because you can have all the skills in the world but if you don't have the tools to do a job you can't do it

You can be the best auto mechanic in the world, but if I bring my car to you to repair and the only tools you have is a fishing rod, a chef's knife, a copy of Kontact and a 50mm camera lens you won't be able to do anything

My perspective on plugin subscriptions has changed over the years and has only been reinforced with the Native Instruments Insolvency and the risk it created

I have probably spent $2,000 or more over the years on various Native Instruments products including upgrades from existing products

While I currently own every NI product I have any interest in, if I didn't I would not hesitate to rent it for a few months and Autosample what I care about. So I could put a $100 or even $200 into NI's pocket and get what I want/need everyone wins that is certainly less risky than dripping hundreds or even thousands on Komplete right now
