Waveform 14 Open Mixer in Separate Window

Hi there,

I upgraded to Waveform 14 (free) yesterday and am liking it so far except for one issue. Previously, I could detach the mixer window and drag it over to a second monitor using the "dock/undock" button in the top right corner of the mixer window. In WF 14, this button is not there. In the user manual, the example image they show of the mixer window has the button, but it does not appear in my DAW. I have attached screenshots of the example in the manual and what I am seeing. I have also tried the technique of using the new tab button to open a new tab with the mixer of the specific project I'm working on, but this does nothing. In my appearance settings, I do not have "Simplify user interface" selected. Having the mixer on my second monitor is pretty important to my workflow, so I would love some advice on how to fix this.

Thanks in advance!

Hi wheelg,

It is a bug with the new version—I experience the same thing. I just reported it to Tracktion.

In the meantime, while there is no way to open the mixer in a separate tab/window in Waveform 14 Free until the issue has been resolved, since W14 gets installed as a separate app from W13, you should still be able to access W13.

Edits that have been saved in W14 won’t open in W13, but if you have project backups from before that, you can restore them from the backups. If you clicked “Convert” on this message before opening an edit (which means W13 won’t recognize the project)…

…you can go to the location on your computer where the project is saved and find the W13-compatible version of the project labeled as “[Project Name] (Original).”

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

This feature seems to be available in the 'Quick Actions Window' in the lower-left corner of Waveform 14 Pro (to the left of the track control), and I can't help but suspect it's deliberately set up this way to make people buy the Pro version. This so-called 'Quick Actions Window' is just a forced patchwork of the main interface's 'Quick Actions Bar' and the separate Mixer window to create a 'new feature'... Honestly, the update in 14 has completely disappointed me. Its operation logic is now extremely chaotic, with all sorts of overlapping and redundant features, and it's completely lost the clear and convenient workflow it used to have. And it seems like there are still a lot of bugs!

(Sorry, it's my first time posting on the KVR forum, and I can't figure out how to add images, otherwise I could show you this weird situation: the mixer and a separate mixer window exist at the same time。。。)

This does appear to be a bug and not intentional. As wheelg said, if you click the new tab button and navigate to an edit, you still see the mixer button that previously allowed you to open just the mixer in a new tab. That button now does nothing. But it is broken in both Free and Pro, therefore it can’t be a marketing ploy.

The Quick Actions window can be useful for some users. For instance, it allows you to have an undocked view of the Quick Actions bar (sort of like how you can you pop out toolbars in REAPER, if you’re familiar with REAPER’s UI). Just because you personally don’t use a feature, doesn’t mean that it has no use or that it was created with the wrong intentions (especially if you do not have to use it).

I do agree that W14 has several issues. You can always continue using W13, as I told wheelg. If you have concerns, you can contact Tracktion at https://tracktion.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new . They are a small team, but they have been responsive and have fixed several bugs I have reported in the past. That would be the most effective avenue for getting issues in the app resolved.

I completely agree that the Quick Actions bar is very useful, and yes, the Quick Actions window is also very useful because it makes the Quick Actions bar more flexible instead of being fixed there. But the problem is that the purpose of this 'Quick Actions window' seems to be just to combine the mixer window with the Quick Actions bar (and the original independent mixer window cannot be opened), which results in the current 'Quick Actions window' merely duplicating the mixer and the Quick Actions bar... Besides that, there are similar function duplications in other areas (especially that bizarre double-layer menu bar, which seems to be designed specifically for users of other older DAWs and it really feels like taking a step back of history).

Look up in SETTINGS - KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS for "Show or hide Mixer", assign your key of choice to it, and with this the Mixer can be toggled visible or hidden. If visible then dock it, or undock it and move it where you want. The button in the right top corner of the Mixer can be used for the docking actions, a button which they obviously have forgotten to show on the Quick Actions Window (which is the Mixer with the Quick Actions Menu glued below to it in one Window) and are likely to repair in a next release after someone reported it now.

Hi talby.

The issues are that the button is missing from Waveform 14 Free and that the mixer view button from the new tab dialogue is not working in Free or Pro.

For the Mixer everything is fully working for me in W14 (keyboard shortcut & layout design mouse actions behind the right top "eye", and docking button of the Mixer).
Also for the Quick Action Bar everything is fully working (shortcut and eye, it has no docking button and never had one, to my my memories).
For the Quick Actions Window the keyboard shortcut also works fine. And this was never in the "eye", to my memories.
So, there is no docking button int the Quick Actions Window, it is always free floating. If this in the past had a docking button then it got lost in W14, right.

Since you have the Quick Actions Bar and Window, that means you are using Waveform Pro—the dock/undock button is only missing from the mixer in Waveform Free. You can see what Free looks like by going to Settings → Feature set → Free and then restarting the app.

I see. You are right.
So, in this case, I am also curious about what will be answered to the one who reported this to Tracktion as an issue, if this is indeed an issue, or if this feature is what on purpose only the PRO users receive for having purchased a license and becoming able to work like a PRO.
Well, I am not sure if the one who reported it will receive any answer, if not being a PRO version user. But I am sure the support team will take notice of the report.
So, I am double curious about the outcome of this!

Their support is still very enthusiastic so dont worry. But I asked about the operational logic of the current user interface as a W14PRO user, and they seemed to respond vaguely ,so I am quite curious whether the main interface, which currently confuses me a bit, will undergo major changes in the future.(After all, even the feature for selecting which UI elements to display appears in three places: the 'View' menu at the top, the 'eye' icon in the upper right corner, and the 'Action Panel' on the left. It looks a bit messy and redundant...And there are a lot of others.)
