i had done that in the past, (and paid more than $10) so I was surprised I had to now enter $0 and re enter my email address.

Yes. Enter $0 as the price there (or enter $10 if you want to receive a license).

And it doesn’t have to just be $10. I donated $15, and I think it’s worth more than that (it’s just that I’m on a tight budget).

If you paid for EightyEight before, the download will be in your Gumroad library and you may have been emailed a serial number (I received mine immediately after I paid).

I just paid the $10 to support the dev, in the hope he adds the ability to add an init or default patch…

I didn’t receive any serial number though, when do I receive the license ?

I was able to make a simple Init patch and save it, but it doesn't show up using the menu at the bottom. It only shows up if I go to the browser and select it there.

Weird, I didn't receive an email from that address, I checked my spam folder too.
I got the download link from gumroad, nothing else.
