Hi Trappist, try the following,

1: Point your MIDI icon to the track with the VST synth.

2: Point the AUDIO icon to another track.

3: Make sure you are NOT in LOOP MODE !!

4: Play your controller and hit RECORD button. This should work :)

Hope this helps.

Yes, I understand the "MIDI data being recorded versus audio" thing. I should have cleared up one point after this thread got started in reference to my "wheel of fortune" plugin issue.

I just wanted to use it as a textural background, and since it plays itself and didn't respond to the Triton at all, I decided to "play" WOF's front panel controls instead. I started tweaking volume levels, cutoff, resonance, drum settings etc. while it did its thing--hoping to get a recording of that.....then lay down other (audio) tracks with it.

OK Trappist, let's try this one :) Download the Free Recorder from this link:

http://www.voxengo.com/freevst/

and put it on Master Out or on the track you're using.

It records everything you hear :)

Good Luck

P.S. I downloaded WOF and tried both the methodes I gave you and they work :)

Heh, I already asked what you're using to play the initial note. :D

If you want to record the control tweaking, you need to record its automation as well. In the main control area (bottom right of the edit page), you'll see two smaller buttons to the left of the play button. One of them (the red one) enables the recording of VST automation. The other one (the green one) enables the playback of recorded automation. The playback is already enabled by default, while the recording needs to be enabled before any knob tweaking will be saved.

Since WOF is pretty much random, no playback will ever be identical twice (at least, that's how I understand it); however, by recording automation, at least it'll be -interesting- each time. :D

Now, since I don't use WOF, I'm not sure what's needed in the MIDI clip in order for it to work. Either way, I would suggest plugging the Triton's MIDI output into your computer. I'm assuming from your previous posts that you only have it connected with an audio cable? If you connect the MIDI, you will then be able to record the note messages into a MIDI clip.

If you have a semi-pro or pro sound card, there will already likely be a MIDI input. If not, I'm fairly certain that you can enable your game port as a MIDI input, though it'll mean buying an adapter and you'd be better off just buying a small MIDI input hub.

If not with the Triton, then how are you triggering the notes themselves? Or is WOF just 'on'?

Heh, I already asked what you're using to play the initial note.
I have a MIDI to USB interface and it works fine. As stated earlier, I use the Triton for a controller, and it works great with every softsynth plugin. But...."Wheel of Fortune" is an unusual softsynth. It doesn't do anything when I press the Triton keys, except maybe drift a little from its "electronic melody." I can't actually play anything useful with it. So--there is no need to start a first note, because once you drag it into a track, it starts.

OK, that solves it, then. As you already discovered, simply dragging an empty MIDI clip to the desired length and then rendering will work--

Now I'd suggest trying out the recording of automation. As mentioned, it'll sound different each time you render due to the WOF's random nature. Why not render a handful of 'takes' and then pick and choose, overlapping them a bit here and there and using Tracktion's "auto crossfade" to blend them together seamlessly? Exciting stuff!

Sounds like fun....is all that stuff covered in the somewhat abridged "manual?"

I haven't seen any manuals (including the existing one), but in this case it's the W.O.F. that's the strange plug-in. Any other plug-in and you would have been off to the races. ;) A manual won't usually cover for exceptional or extraordinary circumstances.

Without actually trying it, I'd be willing to be that Cubase would work the exact same way, and without its thick manual addressing the exceptional situation.

Now get thee to some fun! If you have questions about how to cross-fade it and all that, I'm sure we can help you out.
