This keeps on coming up!
Savepartition (freeware).
Needs a fat32 partition to write the file to, can backup any kind of partition,
with compression.
Now works in windows as well (but can only save the windows system partition from BartPE or DOS boot disk).

backup paranoia may save the ass someday!

same thoughts on regular backup here...
and also thx for the headsup on that app....i have both seagate and maxtor and i wasnt aware of that free app DOH!

Glad it may help you.

I am making this thread a sticky here in the computer setup forum. The topic does come up a fair bit and there are options and tips in this thread, to help any user to be backed up properly.

I have also used DriveImageXML and BartPE and they are good choices for folks without a Maxtor or Seagate drive. If however you have the Maxtor or Seagate drive there is nothing slicker and easier to use (especially for free) than this Drive Wizard software I mentioned above (no dos commands and a slick cd boot up interface to use in case of failure etc.). If you need to buy a drive to image to.... then just get a Seagate or Maxtor drive, preferably on USB 2.0 and you'll be set, as you can get the Acronis software free. In fact, the last Seagate drive I got for my buddy had it included in the box. If not download free from above links.

Also note that some external drives although not labeled Seagate or Maxtor actually contain a Seagate or Maxtor drive inside. For example some Lacie or other labeled products have a seagate or maxtor inside.

The other options in this thread will help those without a Maxtor or Seagate drive. Either way, take notes of the tips mentioned in this thread.

My Ghost 2003 stopped working after i bought a new motherboard.

So i switched over to Selfimage 1.21 which works great and it is much faster than Ghost 2003

Manytone I dont have a seagate OR maxtor drive!..

I dont know what it is because I didnt take it out but the acronis program informed me that I need EITHER a seagate or maxtor installed so it seems mine is neither..

I installed driveimagexml however and it seems to be just what I need...thanks again for the tips guys...

Last week my Power supply of my Music computer died. So I thought it's time to make a complete Backup of my 300 GB C: Harddisc. There are only 169 GB used at the moment.I have a USB HD where I daily save my work with SyncBack.
My Comp have 2 HD. C:/ with windows, prg and also soundlibrarys
and G:/ Data for recording and all data files.

I want a solution to make a whole C:/ backup on a Harddrive and with possibility for incremental store when something changes.

Drive Image XL does NOT do incremental images.

Someone know a free prg that allows this?

Is it a good idea do this via a USB Drive ? There are also solutions with the network card which is faster. When my C: HD sometimes crash, which is the best way to restore C: including windows USB ,network ??

Suggestions and tips are welcome !

Man, this Drivesnapshot sure looks fabulous. Small, it has compression, easy to use, backup from Windows... definitely what the doctor ordered. A "Ghost" killer, and I am a hard core "Ghost" user since like last century

I like DriveSnapshot

I got my old laptop set up as a VM using it.

It doesn't do the ghost/acronis bootable file thing, but using BartPE, it's fabulous!

Strange as you said your drive is listed as ST.
As you can see from this page Seagate labels their drives ST:

So your experience is strange. What is the exact model number listed in your hardware tab? The ST prefix as far as I know indicates it should be a Seagate.

I just opened my PC and my drive IS a seagate!

maybe I should try the software again...ill do it tomorrow though, I sent 45 mins messing around with hardrives, pulling my PC apart so I've had enough fun for tonight..

Hey all,

I made an image successfully with DriveImage XML. I made a BartPE boot disc with the DriveImage XML plug-in. But I can't seem able to use them in conjunction. If I were to make a guess, I'd say that the BartPE isn't able to read my CD-Roms.

What happens is this: I load BartPE. I select DriveImage XML. I choose to "Restore", and then I insert the disc containing the XML... choose "browse"... and the whole thing freezes.

I can run everything from within the Windows version of DriveImageXML, and I have no doubt that it would work. But I can't run it from BartPE as a boot disc.

Any hints?

Recommend a good free Ghost program.
