This is absolutely uncalled-for.ttoz wrote:What makes you so friggin perfect?
I'm far from perfect, in fact, you can think of me as the Reaper of internet lurkers.

Enough.
I am the president of the board of directors of a charity that provides legal services for children who are caught in the middle of custody disputes and have no legal representation of their own. We don't sit around at meetings and discuss whether we should instead be collecting food donations, curing cancer, or the geo-political ramifications of global capitalism. There are organizations that provide musical instruments for the needy, Toys for Tots, etc.

this is actually quite a brilliant idea now that i think of it. i just don't know if it will work or not, it's definitely worth a try though.ttoz wrote:We can have 100 aims. it;s all good, i only meant that i have found mine, i welcome with open arms ideas for others, but i can't run them all, obviously.
having a forum simply named "community" perhaps? we should think of the ideal name for such a thing. "poor ppl" i don't think would work, neither would "donations".
there is a lot of commentary in the social sciences about the decrease in community participation over the last hundred years. we've seen a decrease in church attendance - not a religious issue, but one of community. the church used to be the center of many communities, as was the town-hall in small villages.
these days we don't have anything like that. with the transformation of society and our movement to mediums like facebook and online forums such initiatives haven't really taken a firm grasp yet.
people are not encouraged enough to think about the simple things they can do.
i've heard many times comments like "one trick pony" or "only one piece of the pie". most people might not realize but there are a hell of a lot of grains of wheat that go into the flour used to make a pie. while one isn't important, you sure need at least one to start and build momentum.
i still think your particular aim of donating software will make it a very difficult task to ensure fairness both in the selection of the source and the destination.
none-the-less, which happens to be the perfect phrase in this case, it is definitely one more pony.

i've seen quite a lot of these come and go. there are way more failures than successes.ttoz wrote:I really *really* want to keep this totally within KVR. I am probably not going to budge on that. That doesn't mean you can't do something different of your own, of course go for it. I really have to send Ben a message to see if i can get this approved. Is he still the final say in a yes or no on getting a sub forum?D N A wrote:Well, I see this whole idea as ...
by leveraging a site like kvr to jump-start such an initiative you take away most of the risk involved. this also helps to specifically grow a community rather than just producing many "tribes" which often end up competing rather than cooperating.
one i was very interested in was a development initiative where source-code would be shared between products while being kept behind a NDA as well as with limits on competition between products. there are too many issues of course and the typical developer would not think of this as a very desirable situation to be in. a desire for isolation and divide and conquer are the usual aims.
once you have momentum though such things become far more likely to succeed. (an example i already mentioned - "kvr community" brand software would fit here.)

Theo, I think it might be time for a new thread with the explicit purpose of organizing and beginning your initiative only, locking this thread or leaving it for discussion of other efforts. Probably better to lock it and those interested in similar initiatives based on freeware or whatever can start their own threads. I'm not going to be here for a few hours at least, possibly several days, but I'll check PMs when I can. I'll deal with this thread once you've had a chance to reply or whatever.

where/who exactly are these people that can't afford a DAW?
I've not read this whole thread...
personally, I've seen it is better if people learn to work for something rather than get handouts, but that's all I have to say about that.
