Adding RAM to Receptor

I'm purchasing a Receptor this weekend (I need something to play with when the hurricane hits!!) and I know that Muse offers both a hard drive and RAM upgrade for the Receptor but is it possible to simply add more RAM myself? I'm assuming the RAM used is something standard (i.e. DDR 2700) but don't want to do anything foolish. Anyone have some input on this subject.

I added my own RAM...it's as easy as you could wish...just like any other computer.

I'm doing the same thing. I called Muse the other day and asked them. DDR 2700 non-ECC is the type you want. Don't use ECC. Yes, it's a easy update. I bought a 1 Gig stick for 100 bucks.baby88 wrote:I'm purchasing a Receptor this weekend (I need something to play with when the hurricane hits!!) and I know that Muse offers both a hard drive and RAM upgrade for the Receptor but is it possible to simply add more RAM myself? Hope that helps.
This is what I bought. We use this RAM on our delivered systems. We've delivered over 500 graphics computers with this brand of memory.

A couple of weeks ago I asked on this forum if other types of RAM than PC2700 (that´s 333 Mhz) worked on Receptor and Dan anwered no - only PC2700. However, it says in the knowledge base that Ben linked to, that faster types of memory work.
I bought PC2700 and that works perfectly, and it´s very easy to install.
Andreas.

Actually, I don't know if faster memory would work. Slower won't work. A long time ago we bought ECC (as opposed to non-ECC) by mistake and it did not work.

I find this interesting because the stick I took out of my receptor says Spectek DDR 266, 256MB. I thought that DDR 266 was PC2100 not PC2700. The first thing I did when I received my receptor was to replace the memory with 2-1GB sticks of PC2700 memory so I don't know if the slower memory would have caused a problem or not. It does make me wonder why 266 came in the receptor when 333 is what I keep seeing on here as the standard.

Thanks for all of the input! That's what I suspected but wanted to make sure. Now comes the next question: what about upgrading the hard drive? Will an off the shelf HD work fine? This is a simple question of economics. I can buy a 200gb HD for around $100. Any input is, of course, welcome...
Thanks again!!
Thanks again!!

I read somewhere that all HDs need to be formatted at the factory.
But maybe the formatting software could be distributed - allowing users to choose from a wider range of options for HD?
Just my 2 cents

The hard drive has to be formatted at the factory. Most of the hard drives are either too noisy, but most importantly run too hot. We use only Seagate Baracuda drives and only up to 200 GB. We are looking into the 300 GB drive, but we already know that the 400 GB drive produces way too much heat.

HDD size is a consideration for me. Reading this and another forum thread it sounds like 40GB was only for some original generation boxes, presumably the factory default HDD is larger now, and that up to 200GB (and possibly 300GB later) is an option. Is that right? If so, what's the current default HDD and how would you order a 200 gigger? (And I do know about the Collossus bundle).

The "regular" Receptor comes with a 40 GB drive. That's enough for many customers who are not using monster sample libraries. We offer a 160 GB and a 200 GB configuration for those big sample libraries. The Colossus/Receptor special offer comes with a 160 GB hard drive.
