Is Soundcloud still worth registering for?

I remember reading a lot a few months ago about how Soundcloud is going downhill, has a terrible business model etc. I was going to make a Soundcloud account, but reading all that made it look like registering on Myspace in 2010.

So, was all this death of Soundcloud talk exaggerated, and should I give in and register?

I guess it depends what you want from a SC account. It's free ... what have you got to lose?

Post

yes it's still worth it
circuit modeling and 0-dfb filters are cool

I think it is.. I've had over 1700 plays in the past 10 months, which given the only places I promote myself are here, Ambient Online, and a couple of chat rooms is amazing to me. Plus, there are some AMAZING ambient artists on SC.

Death of SoundCloud? Not happening.

So what? :? What does that even mean?

Soundcloud is a company that convinced people to PAY to host their music on a website that the same comnpany later completely altered the business model for.

They now proffer themselves as a streaming app, where the same idiots PAY so that people can stream their music for free, and be paid even less than spotify in return. In this case nothing at all.

but it's still the best for labels and such to spread info and samplers about their releases I think. Just got release coming up on Glasgowian label, got over 2000 plays in 4 days

I guess that depends on how you look at it. What I have to lose is either time or laziness. And maybe a few Youtube views. But no more than that.

Not sure if that should be "Glasgowian" or "Glaswegian", but either way I do see a lot of competitions and labels who want submissions in the form of a Soundcloud link.

Frankly speaking YouTube is better for marketing just now. But you get 3 hours of free space for fun projects.

It got me an offer from a dark ambient Net label to promote the album I'm working on for a cut of the profit. :P :P :P

YMMV based on talent or lack thereof.. :P :P :P

I wish there was a serious (free) alternative. Soundcloud makes every track look like a sausage, and I don't like sausages...

I've given up MySpace completely...

Every company tries to convince people to pay them money :ud:

It's the people who actually pay... I don't and don't see a need to do so.

Considering the terrible quality of soundcloud, I'm sorry but only someone who is nearly deaf would solely prefer to listen to music there as opposed to merely using the site to sample various tracks, find something they like, move on to the artist's page and make an album purchase.

The streaming is brilliant as a tool for promotion. I have heard youtube plans to make pure audio tracks possible although you can currently encode a track with a static image without too much overhead and the quality surpasses what is offered standard with soundcloud by far.

In any case my point is that I really disagree with the opinion that there is anything wrong at all with soundcloud's business model. What really surprises me is that they manage to run the site at all without far more advertising than they have at the moment. Considering what they provide, they're obviously doing something right.

My only complaint would be regarding something that I entirely understand as well... They seem to profit significantly by providing the ability for a market to exist where "fake followers" can be purchased, much like twitter and other similar sites have been doing. There can be a lot of discussion on the topic but ultimately due to the way the world works this market is natural and for them to refuse to take advantage of it would be profoundly stupid. Perhaps they may in fact rely upon it?

For my own interests however I really don't care in the slightest about the whole popularity contest. I'm not trying to sell albums or rake in listeners by inflating my plays or getting on the front page. For me, simply having the tool (as terrible as it is, the waveform graph I agree is horrid and turd-like) that allows me to offer streaming content for free with an incredible bandwidth from a reliable provider in reasonable quality is absolutely awesome.

It's Glaswegian.

And to go back on topic, SoundCloud is still one of the most popular places to post your music and reach listeners.
Alternatively, that's still hearthis.at which provides similar functionalities (and is a viable alternative). But it's not nearly as popular as SC AFAIK.

So its pretty much like paying for website hosting except you dont have to write all the webpages yourself. And that you dont have to pay for it.

How evil.
