Interesting Kontakt Sequencers?

VST, AU, AAX, CLAP, etc. Plugin Virtual Instruments Discussion

Post

Using Kontakt as a small sequencer is actually pretty handy because almost everything works as a midi sequencer when you change the global settings. While there isn't any uber sequencer that's great, a lot of developers include interesting small sequencers. For example Sonicoture's Konkrete has a cool drum sequencer with an interesting variation feature and a second euclidean beats sequencer.

What other Kontakt libraries have interesting sequencers?

What about the ones from HomeGrown Sounds?

Especially the Multiverse and Kosmology ones. Is that what you're looking for?

Yes, and actually, I almost forgot that I have those. I'll work them in.

Hi ghettosynth, apologies for the brevity and swearing in this post - I just spent the last 12 minutes copying/pasting excellent links to good kontakt sequencer libraries... and then my f**king useless, shite for internet connection phone lost the entire post :x :x

So now avoiding links, but giving names, check out:
Cracklefield;
Riff Generation;
Retcon Boards of Canada;
Digital Revolution (Wave Alchemy);
Black Widow (Synth Magic);
Zapzorn Elements;
Sound Dust Chaos Engine;
Cinematique Instruments Geiger Counter;
And Soniccouture's Box of Tricks.

f**king internet phones...

I’d add those ones to @dark water’s list wich includes many great ones!.

Sequi2R is one that I like.

Excuse me for pushing my own invention, but hey, it's a free one.

Sonuscore The Orchestra combines multiple sequencers that let you come up with a "press a chord and hold it" orchestral sequence split across various sections. It seems cool for coming up with ideas, but the included sounds don't seem particularly great to me. But then, I don't have it, and have only seen videos.

Definitely off the deep end there, but probably more than I want to pay for that sort of thing.

No worries, it's cool. I think that I've downloaded it before but didn't end up using it for whatever reason.

Right now though, things like this fit into my workflow.

Might be, because it's entirely counter-intuitive.

The idea isn't alien to me, I've built similar kinds of sequence generators in Reaktor, it was more about how I was working at the time with respect to using sequencers in sequencers.

Are you referring here to Kontakt VST's MIDI out feature? It's definitely a hidden treasure! I'd say that taking all the options together, Kontakt all by itself IS an uber sequencer, or even better, about the best overall MIDI FX device I know of.

Many if not most sequencers found in K libraries are based on factory scripts, which can be used to drive other plugins without even loading any samples, just loading a new instrument, once you set up this MIDI-out behavior in Options, shown at left below, then switch to the Script Editor in the wrench view and load a preset. I particularly like the MIDI Echo under Effects and the Poly Step under Sequencing. At right is how to set up Live so Kontakt is only used for MIDI out, driving whatever other plugin you want.

For example, Sound Dust's wonderful Chaos Engine variants are (very) prettied-up versions of the factory Drum Computer, and his walk-thru videos about them are great tutorials on how to use the script, once you get that it's there. The Drum Computer is also used by ModWheel to create lots of cool guitar-picking patterns in their Tin Guitar library

But even arpeggiators and sequencers that go beyond the factory scripts almost always will send MIDI out, too; in fact I haven't found one that doesn't.

Other libraries worth checking out include:
any of Sample Logic's that include a Step Animator
Realitone's Banjo and Fingerpicking
Studio Weapon's Underscore (looks like that's no longer available, too bad!)
TURNER MK2 by Sturmsounds-Electro
Audiofier's Abstrung
Lots of SonicCouture stuff, but look especially at their amazing inexpensive scripts-only collection, Scriptorium, for many seq and arp options.

I expect I'll think of some others:)
Excellent topic, and great list previously. I'm a HUGE fan of all the counter-intuitive, fairly confusing delights from sir szcz—Thank you!!

Excellent suggestion nordickvr (and thejonsolo) - even if the OP doesn't think much of our contributions!
I didn't know anything about that company: their randomizer series looks very tempting, especially for me with the 'organic' instruments of Abstrung.

@David, great point about the Modwheel's Tin Guitar and about SC's Scriptorium.

Ooo, SynthMagic/Black Widow looks great, missed that one!

Perhaps a little off-topic, but I feel it's relevant: Do NOT miss the amazing XronoMorph if you're looking for unusual (and free) sequencing delights. You can load your own VST or AU plugins into it, or send MIDI to an external software or hardware synth. I mostly use it standalone via the Mac's indispensable IAC driver, driving Kontakt, Reaktor, anything in Logic, everywhere.
