DPI Awareness - exactly how does it work?

Can anyone explain exactly how this feature works? What does Waveform do? And does the plug-in do anything different?

In Waveform 12 here, IK Multimedia plug-ins load with the correct window size, but with the GUI occupying about 80% of the window. Mouse-clicks were handled as if the GUI filled the complete window. Tracktion Support advised toggling DPI awareness. It was off and enabling it and reloading the plug-in solved the problem.

Conversely, u_he Zebra CM loads fully into a window. When DPI awareness is enabled and the plug-in is reloaded it is in a smaller window. It was 80% of the previous size (my Windows 10 scale factor is 125%, which is 100/80%)

For info, my screen resolution is 1920 x 1080.
