In Sampler: How would I load a single snare sample, generate multiple ‘similar samples’ and then have Sampler play a different variation of the generated samples each time the note is triggered?
(Additionally: how would I control whether it switches variations in ‘Round Robbin’ vs ‘Randomize’)

[using VST3 in Ableton Live 12]

  1. Inside the Sampler, go to the Regions panel. Click the Menu button (or simply right‑click anywhere inside the panel) and, on the left side, choose the first command: Import audio files. Alternatively, you can drag the sample directly from your file manager into the Regions panel.
  2. After importing, click the Menu button again. On the far right, under the Utilities category, select Generate similar samples.
  3. Experiment with parameters such as Phase variation and Similarity. Use the Preview button to check the sound. The New seed button changes the sequence (order) of generated samples while previewing.
  4. When satisfied, press OK. The system will generate new samples and assign them as alternating samples inside the region(s).
    • If you have multiple regions, the operation can apply either to the selected region only or to all regions, depending on the All regions checkbox on the right side of the panel.
    • In the folder of the original sample, a new subfolder named Generated will appear, containing the newly created samples. This is just informational — you don’t need to do anything with that folder.
  5. Below the Regions panel is the Samples panel (always linked to the selected region). On the right side, click the Advanced button to open advanced settings. At the top, choose the sample selection mode (Random, Round‑robin, or Manual). If you want the same mode applied to all regions, press Copy to all in the top‑right corner.
  6. After finishing adjustments, save your global MSoundFactory preset. Otherwise, your settings will be lost if MSoundFactory is unloaded from the DAW or the DAW project is not saved.
