Question about Chinese Winds VSTi

I think your Chinese winds instrument sounds AMAZING, and I am really determined to buy it -- HOWEVER, just before I made a purchase, I noticed that "data folder is fixed to disc D:"...

I assume this means I must install the data to a pre-determined folder on "disc D:" of my computer -- is that right?

But in my case, my drive D: is a CD-ROM... ? What can I do then?

Thanks for asking. Unfortunately, that's the drawback we are facing and there is no solution at the moment.

Your best bet is - either add a new harddrive, or just get the GIGA sampleset instead (provided that if you have a sampler capable of playing GIGA files).

Do giga sets import well into Halion v2? I think I have read there are problems with that -- do you know if that would really work for me?

I have already considered trying to rearrange the drive ID's on my machine (try to switch "drive d:" with "drive e:"), but not sure if I can do that easily...?

PLUS, I think doing THAT would mean that all of my other VSTi's would need to be told where THEIR data files are, because now they would be moved to another drive as well. It would be fine for NEW projects, but whenever I opened an old one Halion (in particular) would say, "I can't find those files!"...

Okay -- well please understand at this time I think I need to wait... But I will keep watching your site and now that I know about you, I will be anxious to see what else you come up with!! You seem to make great-sounding products that fit EXACTLY what I need.

Hi TokyoTain, I forgot to mention, it's the sample folder that has to be set to drive d, you can place the plugin itself anywhere you want. Don't know if this info helps or not.

We think that should work. You can install everything to your drive c and then burn the sample folder to your CD-R/W. What matters is that the sample folder has to be "D:\Audio\ChineeWinds".

In Win XP you can set up a virtual drive that links to a specific directory on your virtual drive (like mounting or symlinking in the UNIX world).

It's the "D:" problem. I remebered I had read this thread before, but forgot about it.

I used the workaround to install, but really hate that. My CD-ROM drive is D:, and probably I'll run into some other programs who won't run because I changed the drive letter. (Yes I managed to install, but I really don't like having to change my system settings because of one single VSTi.)

Thanks to Markleford too... I used the "subst" command in XP now...

Why is there no solution? Modify the VST to use a path relative the .dll location instead of a hard-coded path. Or, add a configuration option within the VST to set the path. Or, have the VST check the registry for a value that points to the path.

Charging for a product without making a simple fix like this is just wrong and I won't spend a dime until it's fixed.

Great support? Okay, they respond promptly to messages. But they haven't fixed the product -- and it's not like a fix would be a major re-engineering of the VST.

Seems some people will live with (and pay for flawed products) rather than demand such things be fixed before spending their money. Offer a big discount and promiss a fix, then wait years to actually fix it, if at all.

Didn't Bill Gates get rich doing just that???

It's not major re-engineering, I agree with that ... unless you don't have access to the source code.
