Vienna Symphonic Library Releases Synchron Harpsichord - Sampled Blanchet Model

Vienna Symphonic Library (VSL) has announced the release of Synchron Harpsichord, a virtual instrument based on a double-manual harpsichord by the Parisian maker François-Etienne Blanchet (1695–1761). Recorded at Synchron Stage Vienna's Stage B, the library aims to capture the specific mechanical and acoustic properties of the 18th-century French tradition.

The instrument used for this collection is a faithful recreation built by Neupert, featuring the traditional disposition of two 8' stops and one 4' stop. To capture the full timbral range of the harpsichord, VSL sampled each stop individually and in combination across both manuals. This includes the "lute stop," which uses a leather-clad rail to dampen the strings, resulting in a pizzicato-like texture with shortened decay.

Technical Performance and Recording

The recording process utilized a multi-microphone setup to provide users with control over the ambient perspective. Because the harpsichord's plectra pluck the strings at a consistent force, the instrument does not respond to velocity in terms of volume or timbre. To address this within a modern workflow, VSL sampled multiple repetitions for every note to eliminate the "machine-gun effect," ensuring natural variation during rapid passages.

The library includes specific samples for the release sounds of each stop and combination. These mechanical noises—the plectrum and jack returning to their resting positions—are critical for an authentic recreation of the harpsichord's rhythmic feel.
