Dreams Brought to Life

Cherry Audio's Dreamsynth is a tribute to the celebrated hybrid analog+digital synthesizers of the mid-to-late 1980s. The innovative design blends flexible dual-wave morphing oscillators, stereo filters, fully polyphonic analog strings, extensive and easy-to-use modulation, studio-quality effects, and MPE support, all in an elegant vintage-style synth interface.

An Era of Innovation

Dreamsynth draws its inspiration from renowned synths including the Ensoniq ESQ-1, the Kawai "K" series, and the Sequential Prophet VS. In the second half of the '80s, music production was rapidly transitioning from analog to digital. These "hybrid" synthesizers bridged the gap, combining the precision and flexibility of sampled digital oscillators with the warmth of analog filters. The combination of digital and analog sound produced instruments with character and a unique sonic fingerprint that still resonates today.

A Dream Come True

With the magic of these vintage classics in mind, we set out to create Dreamsynth. Dreamsynth is a "What if...?" synthesizer incorporating the distinctive qualities of this remarkable era with the best features of modern software instruments to create a uniquely 21st-century hybrid. Here's a look at the highlights:

  • Three dual-waveform oscillators amount to six simultaneous virtual analog or PCM sample-based oscillators with up to 16 voices of polyphony. When modulation is applied, the unique A/B wave mix controls can create a myriad of evolving or rhythmic vector tones.
  • Combines authentic analog waveforms with sampled PCM waveforms for incredible new timbres. Includes a massive library of 430 looping, one-shot, and single-cycle waveforms.
  • Dreamsynth also includes a beautiful-sounding classic string synthesizer that, unlike traditional paraphonic string synths, is fully polyphonic. It operates independently of the oscillator-based synthesizer, and both can be layered and split across the keyboard, with separate assignments for the arpeggiator and effects.
  • The OB-style 12 dB/octave multimode stereo filters enable breathtaking timbres from subtle to extreme.
  • Dreamsynth features exceptional modulation capabilities with 20 mod sources and over 40 destinations. Routings are immediately accessible through our innovative interface with individual pop-up menus and invertible knobs.
  • The effects section includes multiple distortion and sample-crushing options, a 12-stage phaser, chorus, flanger, and rotary speaker effects. Also available are numerous delay (including our acclaimed tape delay) and reverb effects, including our fabulous new "Galactic" algorithm.
  • Supports MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE), making Dreamsynth capable of more organic and expressive performances.
  • Dreamsynth includes a massive library of over 1100 presets from a wildly talented and diverse group of sound designers such as Dave Polich, Huston Singletary, Julie Kathryn (I AM SNOW ANGEL), James Terris, Julian Pollack (J3PO), Katharine Fountain aka FOUNTAINS, Agent Method, Mark Wilcox, Joseph Holiday, and Venus Theory.

Dreamsynth Features:

  • Three dual-waveform oscillators, amounting to six simultaneous virtual analog or PCM sample-based oscillators with up to 16 voices of polyphony.
  • Authentically modeled virtual analog waveforms and 430 looping, one-shot, and single-cycle waveforms.
  • Fully polyphonic 16-voice string synthesizer which can be layered and split across the keyboard independent of the primary synth.
  • OB-style 12 dB/octave multimode stereo filters.
  • Extensive and accessible modulation capabilities, with 20 mod sources and over 40 destinations, including effects.
  • Analog drift control for increased authenticity.
  • Three tempo-syncable LFOs.
  • Arpeggiator with tempo sync, independently assignable to the synth and string synth.
  • Fully modulatable effects include multiple distortion and sample-crushing options, a 12-stage phaser, chorus, flanger, rotary speaker effects, delay, and reverb, including our new "Galactic" reverb algorithm.
  • Support for MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE).
  • Highly optimized coding for optimal performance with ultra-low CPU load.
  • User-adjustable oversampling control.
  • Advanced one-click UI magnification.
  • Complete MIDI control and DAW automation for all controls.
  • Over 1100 presets created by a talented and diverse group of sound design veterans.

Superb simulation of the original device, but:

The copy protection system wants to register the plugin and load some stuff online from time to time.

At homestudio that's ok, but on stage you mostly have no internet and therefore it's a very high risk to use this plugin there. I had several connections to the support, got some solutions but have still this annoying behavior. So only two and not five stars.

This is actually not that far off for a dream synth, if you're looking for a retro digital waveform synth, there's a few things which keeps me from giving it full score though.

The sampled waveforms doesn't sound very good, hopefully they can fix this. You can't import your own waveforms and samples, that would make the synth way more versatile and interesting. And, the string section, if it's going to be there at least add the other instruments usually found in these kind of synths. I really like how you can keep the arpeggiator on and off separately for the string synth and the rest of the synth, I would have liked it even more if that was a feature for every oscillator section as well.

It's a synth with a lot of potential.

Cherry Audio has done it again. A great and powerful synth that takes you back 40-50 years.

The plugin is easy to navigate and making sounds out of it is a lot of fun with 3 oscillators with dual waves on each that you can mix together.

To describe how it sounds is like asking how a fox sounds like, you'll be in a surprise how versatile it is.

I am just very happy with it so far, and that I picked it up at introduction price.

Highly recommended.
