Emergence occurs when an entity is observed to have properties its parts do not have on their own, properties or behaviors which emerge only when the parts interact in a wider whole.
This plugin is a real-time granulator. It continuously records the input signal into a buffer. The content of the buffer is played back as many short pieces of sound called grains. Up to 600 grains can be generated in 4 streams, each having it's own set of parameters that control grain generation.
A single grain is not that interesting. The most exciting things happen when hundreds of overlapping grains play together, creating anything from complex delay patterns to strange noises to beautiful layered soundscapes.

Version reviewed: 1 on Windows
It's one of those plugins where you can try really hard to get a specific sound and sometimes manage to do it, but other times it just gives you something entirely different that is even better than what you initially planned to do. super fun.
Read ReviewI thought at first. .. "Oh No !! Not another Granulator".
But this is user friendly and multi-grain too, just like my muesli ...
Easy to get started then some added depth on hand if needed.
Excellent work.
Sounds good from the videos. Any hope of a Mac version?
Thanks! I would love to release a mac version in the future but I'm not sure when this will happen.
It's a nice plugin rich in creative .
i love this one so much! but i'm having issues with the UI on windows, it appears too big and i can't see some of the plug-in interface... have anyone had a similar problem??
Hi! Thanks for reporting this.
Displays at least 1080 pixels high shoud be fine but I can see how this could be an issue on smaller screens.
Could you give me some more info about your system so I can look into this?
What is your screen resolution and do you have any scaling applied? Which DAW are you using?
hey of course! my resolution is 1366 x 768, scaling is at 100%(default) and so far i've tried loading it in Waveform/Tracktion and Bespoke :).
Thanks! I will fix this in the next update. Stay tuned.
i'll sure do <3.
I tried it in Reaper on my Macbook Pro 13-inch and it is not functioning properly. The GUI shows without the upper animated display. The cursor is not affecting the specific knob I put it on, but the knob two rows above it. I also checked it on Hosting AU and there it is functioning ok, displaying the animated part and being able to move the exact knobs with my cursor but the GUI is not fitting on my screen showing only until the LFO knobs row. And in Studio One it works ok but it shows even less than that, only until the LFO labels. I'm on High Sierra OS.
Even so I played with it a bit and it seems to have a great potential and to be a good creative tool.
Others already mentioned the screen size issue, I'll fix that in the next update!
I'm not sure about the cursor offset though. Can you tell me which version of reaper are you using?

Hi Daniel,
I just updated to 0.2.2 and it seems to work fine now. Thank you.
I am exploring more now how it is functioning.
I'm on OS X 11.6 Big Sur and the VST3 version will not open cause it says Apple can't check it for malicious software. AU works fine. Thank you! Just thought you'd like to know that VST3 doesn't seem to work in Big Sur.
Can you confirm that you did the Terminal command step described in the readme for the VST3 too?
First release of Emergence worked great in Waveform, then 2.0 and now 2.2 both produce a black screen when the GUI is opened. Tracktion devs suggest it may be a JUCE version / bug issue.

And... I just read in the readme file that this is likely an OpenGL version issue. "- OpenGL 3 or higher" is required. I'm using an ancient laptop that is stuck in 2.0. You must have complied the newer versions with this requirement. Please confirm.
Hi Daniel,
Looks like an amazing plugin.
I have a problem installing.
Tried the ways you described:
On my MacBook Pro 202, Monterey.
First maclike really hard to find the folders..I found /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins but there's no folder VST3
I made a new folder VST3 and put the .VST3 in there
I opened terminal and paste your code, run and it says 'password' showing a key icon, tried to type something, this wouldn't work
Is this my Windows curve not making me understand the workflow, or something else?
Can you help?
Thanks, grt. Rob.
It appeared in my folder structure inside Studio One, when I insert it on an audio channel It prompts ' Emergence. component cannot be opened because cannot check it for malicious software' .
One step further, but what to do now?
Thanks.
Hey Rob.
The Terminal command is basically the same for both the VST3 and AU format, just make sure you type in the path where you have copied the plugin.
When the password prompt with the key icon shows up you have to type in your password then press the enter key. Note that your password will not show up on the screen as you type. After that if you typed everything correctly you should be able to type normally again and see no error messages. You can start your DAW now and it should load the plugin.
When I type my password, it says:
attr: No such file: /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/Emergence.component.
robvangameren@MBP-van-Rob ~ %
I copy pasted the .components on the path above, inside library- audio a.s.o.
What am I missing.
Hi Rob.
I tried sending you a private message but can't (because of your account settings).
Could you message me so we can sort this out?
Hello, I downloaded Emergence to use with Cubase 8 Elements, in Windows 10 64-bit.
I followed the instrucions of copying the Emergence.vst3 folder into the c:/Program Files/Common Files/VST3/ directory.
Still, Emergence doesn't show among the VST instruments in Cubase. All my other VST3 pluging are in that same folder, and they show in Cubase and open regularly. It's just Emergence that doesn't appear.
As a rather desperate attempt, I also tried to copy just the naked Emergence.vst3 file into the same folder, but as expected, the result was the same... it did not appear on the list of VST instruments in Cubase.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Carlo.
Hi!
If you go to Devices -> Plugin Manager you should see two tabs: VST Effects and VST Instruments.
Emergence should be in the Effects category.
If it is not there you can also try re-scanning the plugin list.
I don't have cubase but I guess there should be an option for this somewhere in the Plugin manager window.

Daniel - thanks, I am an idiot. It's there indeed.
For some reason, I had assumed that Emergence would have considered an instrument - but being a granulator, it needs an audio input - so in a DAW, it's considered an effect. Makes sense.
Thank you for this great, free, umm - instrument. : -).

Hi Daniel,
Please help if you can.
I'm trying to install Emergence (AU component) on a Mac (a recent M1 Mac running Big Sur OS), but Terminal won't recognize that it is there.
I first copied the file Emergence.component into /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/.
Then I entered the Terminal command:
sudo xattr -rd com.apple.quarantine /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/Emergence.component.
But Terminal returned this:
xattr: No such file: /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/Emergence.component.
I've checked to be sure that the Emergence.component file is actually in place in: Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/
- and it is there.
So any idea where my problem is occurring? Or any workaround?
Can't wait to give Emergence a try.
Thanks for your help!
Randall.
Hi Randall,
You no longer need to do the terminal thing to install the plugin. You can find the latest version here: https://daniel-gergely.itch.io/emergence
Just download and run the .pkg installer, and you should be able to use the plugin in your DAW.
Thanks for the quick answer, Daniel.
I'll go grab the latest version and hopefully that'll fix it.
Thanks so much.
Randall.

Hello,
does a notice exist ?

Any plans to add presets? Or the ability to save settings? This seems like a great plug-in (from what I seen from what others can do with it), but I'm having trouble getting great results with it (will spend more time on it). Some presets would really help. I find it easier to start with a great sounding preset and learn what it does by tweaking, rather than just start completely from scratch.
I'm also using this in Reason, which doesn't support VST3, so I'm using it through Waves Studio Rack, so it's also possible this functionality is already there but not accessible via StudioRack (found this to be the case with McDSP's plug-ins after I purchased EC-300, doh!).
And is there a way to sync this to the DAW clock, or do we just have to do the math? :).
And is there a way to reset it? Besides deleting the plugin and creating a new instance I don't see a way to just clear all the settings back to default.
Hey! I totally see your point about the presets. I will probably add this feature at some point (and ship some factory presets with the plugin) but there are a couple of other things I want to do before that. Same with the reset. For now these things can be done by most DAWs, I haven't tried StudioRack so I'm not sure if this works well with your setup.
Tempo Sync is coming in v1.0, you can already try it in the latest beta.
Thanks for the reply Daniel! Looking forward to the updates.
