Ideal Ambience - the most ideal reverb for mixing:

  • Consistent volume despite length.
  • Hyper-smooth damping.
  • Distance, not pre-delay.
  • Everything to L/R mode.
  • Easily achieves great sounds.
  • Zero latency.

Better Than Your Old Reverb

1) Volume-Consistent Length

Your old reverb gets louder when you increase the decay. So you have to keep adjusting the volume when experimenting with various times. Ideal Ambience will always have the same perceived volume at any given time, regardless of the reverb's length. It doesn't matter if you're mimicking early reflections with an absurdly short length or a cathedral with an absurdly long length: you will NOT have to adjust the volume as you go. Solo Ideal Ambience and check it with your loudness meter to see for yourself. This enables you to first set your desired loudness, then easily experiment and find the perfect length.

2) Superior Damping

Your old reverb's damping quickly swamps the high end. The damping in Ideal Ambience is maximally smooth and natural-sounding. It's easy to dial in. Plus there is a sharpness control to shape it to perfection.

3) Distance, Not Pre-delay

Your old reverb lets you move the reverb in time with a pre-delay. this sounds unnatural. In the real world, the further away an ambient sound is (e.g. an echo, a distant sound) the more the environment's damping takes affect. Ideal Ambience's "distance" parameter takes the damping into account. You will be surprised how pleasant this makes the delay. Also, you can easily time the distance to the tempo of the song as a quarter, eighth or sixteenth note; straight, dotted or triplet.

4) The Correct Volume

Your old reverb is constantly changing volume with every parameter change, tricking you it sounds better when it gets louder and requiring constant adjustment when experimenting, as we've covered. Ideal Ambience's "wet volume" is the exact same loudness as the "dry volume" when set to 0dB. (though damping may introduce slight variation) That means you can choose how much quieter you like your ambience compared to your dry signal and easily choose the desired reverb settings from project to project.

5) Everything to L/R

Your old reverb either processes the left and right channels separately or sums to mono and processes that independently for each channel. Here is the problem: If it is processing stereo to stereo, then none of the signals panned right will have ambience on the left output and vice versa, which is quite unnatural. Mono to Stereo might seem like a way to fix this problem, however the result is signal panned to either side will be 6dB less "wet" than signal in the center. The best current solutions are algorithms that share signal between channels, but this us also unnatural and can sound ping-pongy.

Ideal Ambience incorporates "EVERYTHING to L/R", which generates an equal amount of ambience for everything, no matter where it is panned, just like ambience found in nature. Though you still have the option to process L/R to L/R if you're into that sort of thing (or even M/S to M/S.).
