vocSteady is an "intelligent leveler for vocals", intended to free musicians from the tedious task of automating vocals in the mix.

vocSteady's design causes it to behave less like a normal compressor, and more like an automated fader: it follows the vocalist's dynamics, and attempts to minimize volume differences between phrases, words and even syllables. Lyrics will be easier to understand, occasional bursts (or drops) in energy will be leveled out, and the whole track will feel more "solid".

DiVerSe claims that with vocSteady you'll get a stable and comprehensive vocal track even if your vocalist whispers in the verses and screams in the chorus. vocSteady can be used in situations that need immediate leveling of vocals: Broadcast microphones; Jingle vocalists; Mixes that should be ready by "yesterday"; etc.

Key features:

  • An intelligent compression method, optimized for vocals.
  • A unique algorithm avoids over-compression.
  • One slider operation: no "threshold", "ratio" etc.
  • Gate option to get rid of background noises.
  • "Dual Mode" for handling extremely dynamic vocals.
  • A low-cut filter option, to diminish "poofs" and hums.
  • A large and intuitive Gain-Reduction meter with clip indicator.
  • Trimmers for release time and output volume.

A great plugin, very effective. Probably the most useful effect for getting the voice evened out without any kind of coloring or "squashing" like normal compressors.

To some might be a little CPU hungry but not really bad. On my current system (Intel P6100 @2 GHz, 3Gb RAM) I can run it in a normal rock mix (4~5 guitar tracks, 1 bass, 6~8 drum tracks, 2 keyboards, 2 backing vocals, 1 main vocal) without any problem.

I personally tested it in FL Studio and Mu.Lab, no issues there.

The GUI is very clear and user friendly, might seem a bit outdated and too "cartoonish" to my taste, but nothing wrong really.

The resemblance with Waves Vocal Rider is way too big to be ignored, just this plugin is about 2~3 years older than the Waves version, doesn't require iLock and is 64$ instead of 400$.

Definitely a keeper!

This is not ONE of the greatest compressor/limiter/gate plug ins I have used, it is THE GREATEST!
I have been a professional musician for longer than I care to say, and this thing has just impressed me to no end. The author is helpful, the plug-in is great, what more can you ask for?
Vocsteady does serious work on your vocal tracks. The wave form is amazingly smooth after applying the effect and you can really hear how it has brought up the low parts and squashed the louder parts. Very simple to use, it doesn't come with any presets because as the author says, why would you need presets for an interface that is so easy to use? I have compared it to some compression plugs out there that cost up to 10 times this much and Vocsteady has prevailed by huge margins.
I have used it with Magix Audio Studio, Acoustica Mixcraft and a few others and it seems to work fine with any host application. CPU usage is kind of high, but well worth the end result.
If you are into recording, this is the must have plug-in of the year!Read Review
