XCent

XCent is a circuit-faithful emulation of the Yamaha DX100/DX27 — the compact 4-operator FM synths from 1985 that put the DX7's engine in a box you could actually afford.

Most FM plugins clean up the things that made the original hardware interesting. XCent does the opposite. The YM2164 OPP engine runs at its native 55,930 Hz sample rate — FM sidebands fold back into the audible range exactly as they did on hardware. The harsh aliasing that resulted isn't a bug. It's the whole personality. That gritty top end is why Solid Bass sounds the way it does, and why the DX100 ended up on so much house, R&B, and electro. The YM3014 floating-point DAC is emulated at 10-bit mantissa + 3-bit exponent. The NJM072D reconstruction filter rolls off at ~7,900 Hz. All DSP runs at hardware bit widths: 20-bit phase accumulators, 14-bit operator outputs, 10-bit envelope generators.
