Decent Samples (Decidedly)

When I bought the plugin I didn't get it to work. There are multiple methods for registering but none of these work and there are no error messages or anything. I did many reinstalls, but it just didn't work. After some googling I found out you have to register it from standalone app, registering it from your daw doesn't work. This is pretty annoying because there is no way to know this beforehand.

I used the plugin for a month or so and found it fun and usefull for creating some unique sounds and melodies.

After a motherboard change the plugin stopped working because it lost its license. This happens in the most stupid way possible. There is no error message or anything. Plugin just won't output anything. I tend to create lots of tracks so it is hard to notice that one of the ambient fx tracks just dont work anymore. Therefore I spend hours finishing the song before I found out that this plugin is not working anymore.

After this problem started I never got the plugin working as it should. This plugin looses its license every time you reboot your computer. So I have to try and remember which songs use it and manually register it from the standalone app before opening the songs. Registering it manually multiple times a day is very frustrating. The customer support won't answer my messages. So the problem persists.

$99 asking price is absolutely ridiculous even if the plugin worked as it should. I paid $29 and still regret it. I'd rather not use a plugin at all if it causes this this much problems. I strongly recommend that you stay away from this plugin and the company behind it.

Now that DS has microtuning support (via SCL and KBM files), I'll recomend this wonderful sampler software everywhere. It has import from SFZ and EXS formats, and I gladly use SFZ import for many SFZ libraries I've already had. Though keep in mind DS doesn't import complicated SFZ definitions (with ARIA controls or multiple files, I think). Also for now DS only supports WAV and AIFF samples right now, but it's probable it would support FLAC in the future.

The format of sample libraries is helpfully documented, for those who want to make their own libraries. (Or, like with SFZ, one can look at existing libraries to sus out what do write.). Also it has capabilities for quite interesting effects to put your samples through, like convolution with impulse responses (IR)—so you can make custom reverbs or shimmering or whatnot.

Microtuning support implementation is the first proper one present in a freeware sampler: there's a toggle in the tuning menu to switch between the Sforzando/Sfizz-like mode (samples are picked depending on a MIDI note) and the arguably more correct mode where samples are picked depending on the actual frequency to which a note is retuned.

It's a surprisingly capable sampler. Loads of free libraries available and some awesome paid ones available through it's in-built marketplace. Plus an ever-growing collection of free libraries available on the Pianobook site as well. Oh, and it has a resizable GUI (looking at you, Kontakt). Hard to believe it's free.

One of the best free vsts, has a huge, and growing sample patches. Easier to use than Sforzando by Plogue. I already have several types of pianos. There are also numerous types of other instruments, a sintar for one. This might not have as many as Spitfire labs, yet, but give it time. I've been able to use it on LMMS, and FL Studio. So far I also got a couple of really nice toy piano sound banks. The ease of use is really astounding. Just load the new instrument soundfiles/patch into the folder, and the Decent sampler detects it the next time you use it. I highly recommend it.

Great new tool, particularly for those of us who may never be able to afford the full version of Kontakt. It's very useful especially once you discover PianoBook. I just wish that they had a few more instruments there even if they have more than I could ever use already. There are tons of pianos, as one would expect, but also some more unusual and ideosyncratic ones. Most of the sample libraries and instruments are usually created by community members but they're all very good, at least the ones I have perused.
