Looking for an over the top tape sim

VST, AU, AAX, CLAP, etc. Plugin Virtual Effects Discussion

Post

I'm using tape sim as an effect - mostly for saturation and wow/flutter. For now I'm using a Reaktor Ensamble - Tape Machine (http://www.native-instruments.com/en/co ... show/6617/). I like it, but I'm looking for something new and maybe better.

I like to push it hard in the wow/flutter department so wow/flutter is a must. I'm not looking for something 100% accurate or subtle analog touch. I'm looking for something obvious and bold. And for OSX. And not from Waves ;).

I've found a few plugins and I will be testing them, but maybe I've missed something... Can you help me, guys (and gals)? :)

These are on my "to test" list:

SKNote - Roundtone
ToneBoosters - TB ReelBus
U-he - Satin
Slate - VTM

I too was recently looking for one to completely abuse.

The winners by a long margin (IMO obviously) were Magnetic and Waves Kramer Tape.

Hmmmm edit: you do specify no waves. Sorry

Check out SDRR from Klanghelm ...

It's funny - I have both SDRR and Magnetic :) but does SDRR has wow/flutter?

I read somewhere about using tape echo sim as a standard tape sim - will try that with Nomad Factory Echoes...

try the line 6 tube echo.... controls for lots of wow/flutter. it's just a cool tape echo all around... not anything like authentic really but cool sounding. it's in the basic pod farm and maybe even the free one...

No mention of budget...
I actually use Satin so I'd say go for Satin ($130 if you can afford it) for it's flexibility or Reelbus (20 euros) for economy. Both have wow & flutter, but Satin does all things tape, including echo and flanging/chorus, and does it well. Lots of tweakibility.

SDRR is a saturator, by the by.

Instead of just using one instance of a tape plugin, why not chain several instances together with different settings for each instance?

Toneboosters Ferox is nice, and cheap. Edit - actually I think you'd want to check out their Reelbus.

Virsyn's VTAPE is by far the best I've tried. They may still be having their summer sale.

+1 for Satin...It's so much versatile than other tape sim's out there.

I like Satin, especially for the wow and flutter. But otherwise it doesn't get grungy enough for my tastes. I prefer to bounce sounds to a cheap physical cassette deck and then record them back into the DAW. Also, using my Strymon El Capistan tape echo pedal in looper mode, the sound will begin to deteriorate in really cool ways each time it loops back around. I'll record a couple of minutes of that and pick out my favorite bits.

Try the microcassette effect in Musical Entropy's Guitar Gadgets. Very not subtle but fun and worth trying if you want an extreme effect. Free too so nothing to lose.

TB ReelBus has a "crusty old tape" or somesuch model, which can really push the wow and flutter as well as the tape noise and distortion. For getting that worn-out old tape effect it's the best one-stop solution I've found, except maybe for Sonitex, although Izotope Vinyl, some Reaktor ensembles, followed by a tape saturation sim can work well too.
A well-behaved signature.

Yep, one of the models in Reelbus is absolutely busted in terms of wow, flutter, and stereo artifacts. Cheap too, so worth a look.

As an outlier, how about Dyvision's Video Tape Emulator. That can really bust things up with noise and wobble. Bit of a one-trick pony though. http://www.dyvision.co.uk/videotape/vt.html

Used the Dyvision plug on this track quite extensively, along with a ton of other degradations and noisy things at all points in the chain. I think Dyvision might even be on the master bus actually. Never got finished though. https://soundcloud.com/charityqueen/flo ... -early-wip
