Warning incendiary comment below:
Screw loopy trippy DJ oriented dance crap - I want a platform that doesn't force the music into a narrow style bandwidth.

That's bullshit. Live doesn't force you to make dance music, just like T doesn't force you to play the Polka.semiquaver wrote:Warning incendiary comment below:

I heard that Charlie Steinberg's first reaction was to phone up Yamaha, and tell them they were ceasing all further development and shipping of Cubase and Nuendo. I believe the quote was something like
"Hey, Man. Like, freakin' Live 5 has come out. I just dont see the point any more. Mackie, Cakewalk, all the other big guys have had it, and I'm out of here first, man. I'm giving it all up to fulfill my youthful dream of being a renaissance fair jouster..."

An idiot on Set Theory:
"In some cases there is an object called red that contains everything that is red. In much the same way a pot is a plate."

Yea, I heard that one about Charlie, too. All the best to him, not a boy any more, is he?
Did you hear that Apple made Logic open source now that Live 5 is out? Pretty cool I think, they're already making Linux version!

i really hate Lives 'workflow' (or lack of)
it's pretty flexible nowadays but it's still very much orientated towards loops based music, which is great. Just not how I (and a lot of T users) want to work.

you could think of the release of live5 as a GOOD THING for tracktions development too.. helthy competition etc (even though theyre not in the same price bracket).

Live is oriented towards tweaking clips as they loop it lets you seitch out loop layers and sections on the fly and print those. -so it leads the user towards music that has open ended looping sections with exchangeable layers. That is *very* particular. ie not Pierre Boulez, Woody Guthrie, Captain Beefheart, Miles Davis, Divan Gasparyan or... don't get me wrong, I think live is a fabulous tool and represents some fresh and powerful thinking - but it is highly optimised for a particular kind of music making - looping/layering/improv. If thats your bag, enjoy.

You can make 'loops' of any length you like in Live, or *gee* not loop them at all, and you can work exclusively in Arrange view as well. I generally don't trigger things on the fly and live in Arrange view most of the time. The Session view is more of a mixer for me. The one big thing it doesn't have that T has IMO is the ability to edit in the tracks. This for me is T's greatest strength and something other sequencers don't generally do.Being able to eye clips and notes in relation to other tracks is just too useful.
You can work linearly in Live4, there's nothing preventing you.
Anyway, I heard Cubase's heart stopped briefly last night, he's now on life support and not expected to recover completely. Brain dead I'm afraid. Congress may fly in for a special session to make sure no one pulls the plug. I hear Bush said it was a good opportunity to shore up his conservative base.
Damn you Ableton! Damn you to HELL!

I also heard that the reason the French and Dutch voted against the EU constitution was because Live 5 has a load of new features that supercede it. Bet you didn't know that!aldi wrote:i read today that live5 is announced and it has new features that make tracktion useless for mackie, like pdc, clipfreeze and mackie control support.
