Basically, all the original programmers wanted to move onto other things, so the community generally got the sense that the application was just sitting gathering dust whilst the only company members left were businessmen proselytising a 'dead' product.

Fact was, a new team had been hired, and the reason that updates were slow in coming is that this new team had to take time to sit down with the code, look at the architecture and be very cautious about making changes until everyone (in the new dev team) understood completely how the code worked and how everything was put together before making large changes.

The first few updates seemed pretty menial. Small changes to the UI, some 3rd party plugins thrown in and made to look like part of the original package. However, a couple of months down the line the new version has come up to pace with all the refinements one would expect of competing packages.
Whoahhhhhh, <screeching brakes>, hold on a sec there.
I own a single-seat license of Newtek Lightwave 3D. You are either seriously misinformed, or a LW fanboy to think that LW has progressed (LW 8.3) to the point where it competes with Maya. I know I said "this is only software", and the same holds true for Lightwave, but in this case, it's $895.00 software, for which I originally paid $1500.00. So it's not so easy to replace with a $1300.00 version of Maya that requires maintenance upgrades that cost $$$ as well.

Sorry to butt in, but the analogy is flawed and I had to point it out. LW is to Maya as T is to Sonar? Maybe so, at least in depth of capability (although the same argument could be made for LW's workflow advantages as can be made for T's).

Now, make some music damn it!

Barbarossa, you say that Mackie is treating Tracktion like a toy. That is just your opinion, as Mackie has clearly spent quite a bit of money, ad space, trade show space, etc. It's not a toy to them.

Also, you mention features that are "standard". Says who? Tracktion doesn't WAN'T to be standard. That's the beauty of it. Yes, I would like folder tracks, but it's not standard. It's included when the devs of certain software want to put it in. There are no rules here. You mentioned professional screensets and layouts. Tell me, what is the "standard" that is so much better? It's OPINION, not standard. T's layout won't likely change.

And bodhialok, you say that Jules was inconvenienced in the updates. But you had to be around then. I was. I never posted right away when I bought. But after being registered for a long time, I finally decided to start posting here because of the passion of Jules and the community. Jules was VERY into Tracktion, and DID give updates, often withiin a couple hours of a release. There was a good vibe around this forum, and it was cool to be a part of it. The updates came more often then even EXT. Yes, Jules may have gotten frustrated at times. But that's programming in general. But Jules never originally planned for Tracktion to become what it is today.

Regardless, there's no reason to panic. Yes, I want to hear more about what's going on. But Tracktion still does what it did when I bought it, and I have no reason to complain.

Koolkeys,
i call it standard, because they are necessary to work in a productive way from medium projects upwards.
It's therefore not a matter of taste, it's a matter of needed functionality to reach a certain amount of productivity.
I didn't say, how they should implement it. That would be a matter of taste. ;)

But who makes the decision on how things have to be to handle a certain amount of productivity? I know that I and many others run FULL projects on Tracktion, and at times, more than others. I'm Digidesign certified in ProTools, as well as formally trained in Cubase/Nuendo, Digital Performer, and others. "Standard" is a matter of taste. How you implement things is another matter of taste. All these pieces of software have their pros/cons, but I've not seen anything in any of them that is standard. Tracktion has things that nobody has yet. If you can't work in the Tracktion environment in a productive way, then Tracktion is not for you. The functionality is there. You just don't prefer it, so it's not to your "taste".

I want to see where "standard" functionality has been defined. What, because other software has something Tracktion doesn't? So what. Tracktion was designed to be a change from other software. Tracktion was the FIRST host with freeze. Tracktion had in-line MIDI editing BEFORE Cubase, Sonar, EXT, Live, etc had it. Tracktion has a workflow that helps it's users get MORE done in LESS time. And since the software is a tool that shouldn't get in the way of making music, that could be a "standard" feature set.

Despite all this jabbering, nothing is standard. You may not like it, and that's fine. But there are no rules for what you "need" to have full productivity. "Standard" doesn't exist.

Personally, I think "standard" is what users of ANY host requests. Meaning that there are certain things you will find requests for on EVERY forum for EVERY host - unless the host already has it.

So the cross-host, cross-platform features are the "standards" IMO.

Not even a record button rule?

Joking, of course, but this did seem a slightly ridiculous statement... :D

The only standard is that all users of all hosts have things that they wish they could change or "improve". ;)

I only went on the "standards" rant because he chose to say that because T didn't follow these so called "standards" that it wasn't professional, which is the furthest from the truth. Yeah, there are things that can't be taken away, like a record button. These things are part of recording, and "standard" being that there is no use without them. But his comments were just unfounded and very opinionated. So my comments were in defense of Tracktion.

Tracktion is just as professional as any other host out there. It doesn't have to be as feature-packed to be as professional. That's my point.

P.S.- Really, I don't even know why I try to defend my point. It's tiring, really......

proffesional is the an application handles the most needed things when you need to make money with it. in this case it's recording music. when a smal band steps into my studio where i can record the whole band with just a few tracks (up to 20) tracktion is great. but what when the same band comes later back and because they have some new ideas and connections and they want to ad further instruments to the songs (working with 30 and up tracks in tracktion is horrible and the gui nearly stands still on a big screenresolution). or lets say they want to have their songs a bit faster (bad timestretch). or they simply want to rearrange a lot of stuff (horrible, because there's no offsetsnap). so when i don't know, what might come, i decide to take a more "proffesional" application (and i hate, hate, hate it, that i have to do it). i tried to use tracktion in my studio, but there were 3 times the case, where exactly described things happend before i went back to logic on apple (and i hate apple (the price) and the price of logic). because you never know, for whome you'll do a job tomorrow. would you choose tracktion, to record a 2 hour opera or classic concert with 16 tracks ? would you choose it to do remixes with lots of samples, that need to be timestretched, or would you rearrange stuff in tracktion, where the band has played very lose on a click so you had to zoom in to cut clips just before the next snap, zoom out to move it, and hoping, you didnt lose it's relation to other tracks, because i can't groupe them in any way. would you try to record for example u2 with it, where you could be sure, that every musician wants his own monitormix during recording ?
a proffesional application can handle ALL or nearly all situation that might come in a studiosesion. and tracktion is fare away from that. so please stop defending tracktion, when it comes to professionality. tracktion is great for hobby musicians and SOME proffesional projects. not more till now.

ARGH! You're scaring me, Aldi! I've barely touched Tracktion since buying it, because I haven't been home, but noticed some problems right away. Didn't notice the snapping thing yet, though - that's a shocker! The monitor mix thing doesn't worry me, as I use RME's Total Mix for that.
