Ever since the advent of the internet and the proliferation of nutritional knowledge, people have been gravitating away from your standard cut white bread and more towards the healthy grains. Now, white bread is the de facto standard when it comes to toasters. Everyone has a toaster that can toast white bread. I decided white bread wasn't in my best interests and started to buy whole wheat bread, which is indeed baked wider. Now, I go to put my bread in the toaster, and it doesn't fit right. Either I have to scrunch it in, or nibble off the crust. Now I gotta buy a new toaster, because my bread isn't backwards compatible. But the new toaster, cooks bagel cuts. So I say, why not save some energy, and toast my french rolls and pita bread, in the toaster? I put it in, and one side of the bread is now sticking out, hence untoasted. I try to angle it in, but it fails. Now I am hand over fist with large denominated tender, looking for a thick and deep toaster, asking all the salespeople where it is. Meanwhile, my testosterone levels have decreased and my bread is not toasting correctly. Corporate bigwigs are looking through security cameras, laughing at my plight, while they sell toasters to Wonderbread kids, who think bologna is Russian for mastication. But then I realize that supply and demand is working well, as they supply a toaster that won't toast my bread, while I demand a toaster that will. As I was busy arguing with a salesperson, I saw my wife looking doe-eyed at a vegetable peeler. Do you think she is cheating on me?

Sounds like a pretty frustrated amateur who couldn't adapt from hifi speakers?

My VXT8s sound "crappy" in specifically useful ways - they have no punch (so I know when my drums do), teamed with super accurate low end making dance kicks seem more like sub bass notes than thumps, and have scratchy high-mids that makes mixes that have become mid-rangy from overcompression sound particularly terrible (which sadly is most rock/pop music now), also accenting when high frequency transient things (such as the attacks of hihats and other cymbals) have been squashed into an unnatural sound...I can't really imagine a company selling them and advertising them as anything else but a studio monitor, except for a speaker for masochists. But, they're my choice because the difference between a good mix and a shitty one is night and day (compared to a speaker like my Spendors that make just about anything sound good). When a mix is coming together, it all falls into place like when you've done all the nitty-gritty of a puzzle and are just easily flinging the final pieces in, or an old school camera lens that breaks the image up into a kajillion pieces until you adjust it for the perfect picture.

I think there's a grain of truth in his article. I did notice, when buying monitors, that a lot of the frequency responses were not 'real world'. One had a freq. resp. of 100 Hz at the low end. How can you tell what your bass is doing if the low end is cut off at 100 Hz??
What he should be griping about are those $400.00 Beats headphones by Dr. Dre. that they pawn off to the kiddies at Best Buy.

Now about "studio monitors." The person who wrote this shouldn't be allowed to work in a professional studio ever. I've never read something that more thoroughly missed the point of making a mix. First of all, if you're not always checking your mix on a variety of systems, you've failed. A good studio monitor set up is designed to a more "precise" or "accurate" sound, and also give you a much enhanced stereo field, though you pay for it by having a smaller "sweet spot" than your typical hi-fi stereo speaker.

He complains about the sound... why would anyone buy studio monitors they thought sounded bad? I love the way my modestly priced Mackie's sound and appreciate that they're not overly flattering to what I put in them. I could listen to them all day but if I was doing something that was getting released into the world, I'd bounce between them, my Boston Acoustics and iPhone headphones because these are all things that are likely to be playing back my music.

Oh, who am I kidding. No one listens to my music.

let us not forget our friends the hotdogs and their buns...hotdogs typically around here come 10 to a package while the buns come 8 to a package. Unless of course you want to pay more for jumbo hotdogs that do come in packages of 8, but often do not fit well in hotdog buns. Note here in the NE part of the country we have these things called spilt-top buns so this might not apply to everybun
