Is there really no plugin for a Scales database?

Chords, scales, harmony, melody, etc.

2^12, not counting zero gives 4095 scales. doesn't it?

where does anyone come up with 462?

As somebody already said Ableton Live and probably most other daws have MIDI tools that allow you manipulate intervals and scales but they won't teach you as such.

But there are loads of standalone music theory programs.

Quite right. I was referring just to the 7 note scales, I didn't want to seem too alarmist ;)

even so, there are not 4095 scales as many of those will just be transpositions of others. for example 1001 (0, 3) is a pattern that can occur at 12-4+1 different offsets and only one of those offsets is valid, starting from the root note so only offset = 0 would be valid.

i don't think you can simply take 12!/(n!(12-n)!) for every n 1 to 12 because it would still contain duplicates.

Oops. 4095 is the number of chords without rotational isomorphism (2 to the 12th -1)

There are 2048 n-note scales for all n(=2 to the 11th)

weird though, i didn't expect that. only ordered combinations with a fixed base happens to be 2^12/2?

and the implementation is incoherent, apparently.

I have a windows app I wrote a while back to help me with music theory (programming the maths really helped me understand the theory) . Anyway I never thought of sharing it as it is rather rough but this thread has made me think it could be helpful to others so I will tidy it up a bit and put a link up when done. It is not a VST although I guess it could be made into one.
