The major difference is the virus fades and pans the oscillator unison left/right/left/right as you adjust the knob. Xhip doesn't do anything like this, just offers a detune depth.

The number of unison can be adjusted with the "saws" knob, but this isn't saved in presets in version 7.

The virus I believe has a completely stereo signal path and allows you to route channels to multiple filters and so on.

So, quite a bit different. The next version, 8, which is currently still alpha can do stereo voice unison and if you combine that with oscillator unison will give you a full stereo result, just like the virus. It still can't do the fading/panning as you adjust the knob though.

Free plug-ins for Windows, MacOS and Linux. Xhip Synthesizer v8.0 and Xhip Effects Bundle v6.7.
The coder's credo: We believe our work is neither clever nor difficult; it is done because we thought it would be easy.
Work less; get more done.

I only had a chance to mess with Sylenth1, Alchemy, and Diva last night. (Ended up buying Diva just because that intermittent crackle in the demo mode was murder over my monitors!) On each synth (including the Virus) I created a new patch from scratch that used only a single oscillator, with detuned hypersaw (or closest functional equivalent) and some amount of unison, where available. Also configured each patch to use a 2-pole/12db filter, but left the filter wide open in the saved patch.

I recorded a MIDI chord progression at two octaves and applied filter cutoff modulation for the first 5 bars of each 8-bar section of each MIDI track. (The last three bars of each section have filter open all the way.)

I also ran each synth through the same external delay and reverb, because this is what I would normally do if I were using the patch in a song. There's no modulation in the recordings, external or otherwise.

The Virus:

Alchemy:

Diva:

Sylenth1:

The Sylenth1 patch sounds to me like there's some kind of envelope modulation going on with the filter somehow, but I didn't program any modulation, and can't see anything in the patch that would give it the sort of bite that it does.

The qualities I like in the Virus patch are the stereo width and the sort of fizziness it has. So far Alchemy seems to match both of these particular qualities the best.

EDIT: The Virus patch really pushed the Virus to its DSP limits. I started out with a 4-note chord in my MIDI sequence but had to reduce it to 3-note chords because the extra note was resulting in voice stealing. (When using the Virus in TI mode, the synth divides DSP duties by multi parts- 8 parts on each DSP chip... I could have doubled the note count if I were running in non-TI mode.)

I think that z3ta is basically a Virus ITB. That's the one I would look to as a replacement for any Virus sound. Don't forget to set the settings to max quality.

u-he DIVA has an accurate emulation of the JP-8000 supersaw that's the best supersaw oscillator ever made.

Demo of Diva's supersaw oscillator by Jonas Hansen his patches are awesome.
Watch at least 720p quality for full audio quality.

@ 7:40 is my kind of supersaw + when DIVA is opened up with that patch.

Synth 1 doesn't do too bad for free:

Surely check out the MUX!

It can do 25 fully editable super layers per oscillator and as many oscillators per patch!
So you can layer many many saw waves on top of eachother, or even different kind of saw waves or even other kind of super waveforms.

Below is just one example. Check it out yourself with your own sequence and one of the super fat MUX presets in the library: Download the MUX demo from http://www.mutools.com/mux-downloads.html

I think you left the oscillators phase sync on, should be set to free running somehwere in Sylenth.

The "phase" knob is indeed at zero, but when I was working on the patch last night it didn't make any audible difference if I changed the value. After looking at the manual, it looks like the knob wasn't doing anything because my patch only uses a single Sylenth OSC. Retrig is enabled, and I did not experiment with disabling it. I will experiment a little more with it tonight. I don't see any other parameters listed in the manual that sound like they would affect the phase.

Man...I wish I had the kind of money where I could just up and buy a $180 VSTi just because the demo restriction was annoying me. :hihi:

The Diva super saw is lovely nice test comparison... It's a fantastic synth.

Spire does a nice super saw as well.
