I want it but having bought v4, v4 update, and then finally upgraded to v5, I really thought they could give me a better discount than $199. If they drop it to $99 then it is a no-brainer but if i'm going to spend $199 I think I'd rather get the ozone/neutron bundle.

I’ve never seen ghettosynth musing so wisely as in this thread. Good points, old chap.

Arturia are on quite a tear recently, which is impressive. I'm always lured in for a minute and think oh maybe I'll go back to the v collection again. And then I remember that they are only just ok usually. The DX7 is definitely probably the least needed emulation right now, given how good the free Dexed is, as well as NI FM8 for going beyond the original. Although maybe people who need a huge GUI would benefit.

For me it is frustrating that in thread after thread f**king money so dominates that the other stuff is drowned out. From my perspective, it shows how people are slaves to money. I have no interest to read as they demonstrate their slavery over and over.
Now, if there were a forum where only the instruments themselves were talked about, I would happily frequent that and we could all get what we want.
I think that you know the reality though, what makes threads popular is the complaining and argument, not information.
But now that I expressed my frustration with it, I'm good for 10-20 more pages of complaining about price

Dexed is purist. I thought that Arturia would also be purist about it, like they were with the M12, and so that there wouldn't be much point, but that's not the case. Filter and feedback per operator and really powerful envelopes makes it more flexible than either FM8 or Dexed.Echoes in the Attic wrote:Arturia are on quite a tear recently, which is impressive. What I can't tell yet is if you can customize the algorithm? If not, then FM8 will still get a lot of use IMO.
I think that the synths are really damned good this time. If I keep talking about it like this I'm going to talk myself into spending $100 more than I know I should.

When I got Analog Lab 2, I spent many, many hours auditioning every single preset, and marking about 5% of them as favorites that I might want to load up later.Fleer wrote:Thoughts on Analog Lab 3 and its 1500 additional presets compared to Analog Lab 2?
Since then I've used the plugin 7 times (I keep notes on usage) in the recording of 369 songs. So it wasn't time well spent
In AL3, some of the DX7 and CMI presets are good, but I'm just not going to take the time to preview all of them.
To me it's faster to patch sounds myself -- at least after studying a few presets to help learn the instrument. Presets in the Buchla Easel demo (but not AL3) were educational because it's such an unfamiliar system, despite being used to complex oscillators and LPGs.
I'm kind of thinking about getting the Buchla plugin, but also kind of thinking about uninstalling AL3. The interface makes me unhappy and there's just too much stuff to sort through for my tastes.

In addition to the new presets, the functionality is similar to AL 2,. There have been some updates to the GUI (like selecting a 'type' in order to drill down to the instruments. It's all straight forward though. There are some excellent patches for the new synths, included in this free update. Several of my VC5 synths were updated tonight also. The four new VC 6 synths can't be accessed for more elaborate editing, since I haven't upgraded (yet) to VC6... but the others pull right up, including the few that didn't get an update today.Fleer wrote:I’ve never seen ghettosynth musing so wisely as in this thread. the analog lab 3 keeps timing out. am now using a download manager that can resume the download since ASC doesn't seem to be able to finish the download.

just demoing the latest synths it was like going back in time to the 80,s. The whole music industry seems to be on this weird acid flash back from yesteryear. Don't they remember how crappy the 80's were. How cold and sterile music became because of the dx7. However the Buchla and CMI look amazing and sound great

CMI looks interesting, I always looked on at awe at Fairlights when they were new, using a computer was still an enigmatic thing for most people. I remember my old C64 atop my Akai AX73 with my green monitor looked very Fairlight-esque, it made me smile
I'll definitely try and get the V collection finally, when is the question..

Dexed is definitely purist, but it does sound great, and is also super straight forward with a simple gui, not having layers of sub pages like the Arturia one (or NI for that matter). For anything more there are plenty of advanced fm synths out there. I will say though that I like the original DX7 look. I miss that from FM7. As silly as it is, I've actually used fm8 a lot less than I used fm7. Maybe I just don't like looking at it as much. Kinda wish Dexed had that style as well.ghettosynth wrote:Dexed is purist. finally got all of my v5 updated to the newest one, and demoing the v6 stuff.
i really like the DX7, it feels like a very modern take on that synth with a really slick UI. dexed wasn't that exciting for me. i like fm8 but i doubt i would make new patches with it, whereas with DX7 seems like it would be great fun to fool around with. i have yet to really figure out FM synthesis, i do like the sound. i have sytrus which has nice sounds, but it confuses me. i feel like this new DX7 is less daunting and more quick to open up discovery for new sound design ideas.
analog lab 3 was a free update for v5 and it certainly loads faster and it doesn't seem buggy to me. analog lab 1 was almost unusable, i never even made a song with it. 2 was pretty decent but still somewhat buggy. however i made many songs with it and liked it quite a bit. 3 seems like they have pretty well worked out the kinks finally. i have keylab49 so i like how everything is premapped for immediate performance, which is nice.
still need to get to the point of actually doing my own custom sound design tho. presets are cool but there is something very fulfilling about making new sounds from scratch. i do like how analog lab gives the ability to mash up two instruments to create interesting variations. yeah i can do that in my DAW but it feels like a lot of work, whereas in analog lab making multis is fairly straightforward and relatively painless - aka fun.
what's nice about analog lab is that if i make a preset i can share it with other analog lab users, even if on my end i did a lot of custom under the hood stuff with v-collection, the people i collab with who only have analog lab still can use my presets. that is pretty cool. i convinced one of my collaborators to go ahead and buy a keylab essentials controller, which comes with analog lab, so i am excited to see what transpires.
so anyway if it seems like i am bitching about the price it is not like i don't see the value in this plugin collection. if i was still a working stiff with a day job i'd drop $199 no problem, but as a starving artist that is barely pro and has already spent too much money on gear i can wait on it. i mean i have komplete ultimate and synthmaster everything and roland cloud as well as a bunch of other stuff so it's not like i am really hurting for new sounds atm, i am actually kind of overwhelmed with what i already have. like, i don't really need anything new, i could stop buying softsynths all together and just fool with reaktor 6 alone for the next few years.
i have not messed with the other new synths or the updated piano V2 yet. i'm sure i will get vc6 sometime in 2018 but probably won't be in too big of a rush on it at this price point. dx7 and an updated piano tho i can see fitting into my workflow. the rest in v6 is more in the "nice to have" category, given that i already have v5.

There really aren't many synths with the same features that Arturia has. People have been asking for a modern take on the DX7 with a great U/I and I think that this is a pretty good effort and I'm not convinced that there are really good alternatives other than FM8. Don't get me wrong, I think that Dexed is a cool project, but it's not really that and it's definitely catering to a different market. The purist stance is of marginal interest today. We simply don't have the same limitations that we had in the early late 70s and early 80s.Echoes in the Attic wrote:Dexed is definitely purist, but it does sound great, and is also super straight forward with a simple gui, not having layers of sub pages like the Arturia one (or NI for that matter). Will the V6 upgrade be available discounted at sites like JRRshop or AudioDeluxe?
That may make the upgrade price more reasonable.
