With that in mind.. Analog Lab 3 FTW. You get the full gamut of the current crop of V Collection synths, and (most of the ) critical controls are mapped to MIDI CCs you can adjust.12deadpixels wrote: ...
Analog Lab 3 seems a valid option. I can only spend less than $100, so that's why my choice is limited to those, also Diva+Repro covers me on the cs-80ish sound. Actually, I am looking for something that sounds "light", rather than "beefy" (i know it may sounds strange, but basically i am covered on this regard with the other plugins). I was also looking for ML Kaivo, but I cannot use the voucher for that one as they don't sell it.

Yes, i think I am going towards that option. It makes sense.

Analog Lab is great value if you're happy to pick a "close enough" preset and make some tweaks to it. Plus you can layer a couple of sounds into a multi. It's quite good really.

Ah dude, don’t get rid of Bazille! It’s the best for sound design! It can do crazy stuff none of the others (sans Zebra) can do. The learning curve is a bit more than a standard subtractive synth, but it’s one of the coolest sounding synths ever.12deadpixels wrote:I have an i7 3ghz macbook pro 13" and I have Diva, Repro, Zebra, Bazille (which I want to get rid of), Madrona Aalto, Serum and Komplete Select. I use software instruments mainly for film scoring and sound design and I use Logic Pro X. I don't have FM8.

Thanks Sprnva and Dangayle for your opinions.
Eventually I sold Bazille. It was great but I am covered with Audulus, NI Reaktor Blocks and VCV rack, while Phase Distortion is doable in Zebra (although more limited). The Logic Modulator Midi FX also it's quite versatile to allow me complex shapes over time. It was also quite demanding for my CPU. However, I might buy it again later in the future when I have a more powerful workstation.
Still haven't decided about Analog Lab. On one side is surprisingly versatile to be a collection of presets and I can see a possible use and benefit for my workflow, but on the other hand the sound is not convincing on its own. Perhaps my ears are now used to u-he and madrona labs sound, but I found many of the arturia's vst a bit unpolished and aliased (I am a big fan of their analog line and I love my microbrute). Perhaps this is a matter of listening to them individually rather than inside a mix, or maybe it's the design of the preset themselves, but the V3 stuff does not convince me at all, while Synclavier, CMI, DX7, Solina, Easel and Clavinet presets sound a bit better. Interestingly I am able to get sounds I like using their multis, and creating my own.
I was now considering instead to get an FX. With the voucher I can get Satin for about £20 and Fabfilter Pro Q2 for about 40 (although as I am a student I can get fabfilter plugins until August 2018 for half price). Anyway, I think that I am derailing from the topic now...

To me Aalto and Easel V are very different. Aalto is a beauty but not as truly modular as the Easel; you can't clock the sequencer as flexibly, you can't route the modulation osc to anything but linear FM, etc. The oscillators, LPGs and reverbs both have very different character as well. I think they complement each other nicely.

working on some sketches w/ aalto and easel ,
and find them fitting together nicely ...

Thanks all
I eventually ended up getting Analog Lab as I needed some quick presets, while for other sound design duties i relies on VCV rack, Supercollider, Zebra, Reaktor.
Yes the Easel is a different instrument indeed and quite nice, but it did not inspire me (I have also the wonderful free reaktor ensemble which emulates the Buchla 200/200e system).
The only soft modular plugin i really want now is Pulsarmodular P900. The best sounding out there.

You seem to be quite new to this stuff. It really depends what is your aim, but (maybe with the exception of Modular V, in terms of "modularity") none of the instruments in Virtual Collections replaces or can be replaced by any of the ones you are mentions. In Reaktor you have some recreations of old hardware, but they are sonically quite different, and you can't recreate the patches for the hardware on them, as you can on Arturia stuff.12deadpixels wrote:Thanks all

Arturia instruments are replicas of old hardware, like the MiniMoog, the Prohpet-5 and ProPhet VS, the Jupiter-8, the Yamaha CS80, the Oberheim Matrix-12, the Synclavier, the Fairlight CMI, etc. You can recreate some of the sounds of the old analogs in Zebra and Reaktor, but that's pretty much it. You can't recreate the sounds of Synclavier V and Fairlight CMI V and the DX7 V in any of the ones you mentioned, for example.
However, since you seem to be more interested in modulars, I guess that doesn't bother you that much. That said, Pulsar 900 is another virtual modular and, besides the sound, will not add anything, in terms of sound design, which you don't already have in VCV and Reaktor Blocks.

The sound of the P900 is very nice and moogy and polyphony is only a switch away.fmr wrote:12deadpixels wrote:That said, Pulsar 900 is another virtual modular and, besides the sound, will not add anything, in terms of sound design, which you don't already have in VCV and Reaktor Blocks.
Reaktor blocks unfortunately is mono.

Yes, Pulsar 900 is polyphonic and "moogy" (so is Modular V, BTW). It sounds great, too. But in terms of sound design, which is what the guy emphasized, doesn't add anything to the table.Stefken wrote:The sound of the P900 is very nice and moogy and polyphony is only a switch away.fmr wrote:12deadpixels wrote:That said, Pulsar 900 is another virtual modular and, besides the sound, will not add anything, in terms of sound design, which you don't already have in VCV and Reaktor Blocks.

I have half a mind to open a dispute with Paypal, but I imagine it won't get my money back and could blacklist me from buying the software later. What a load of crap, seriously.
