Video Support for Bitwig ;-)

yeah it s weird they re so quiet about video support. Vidplay works, but still it s not handy enough for sound design for film or vr imo..
As the image just gets updated when you playback(this is a design decision on the bitwig side and has nothing to do with vidplay..) but not when you scroll through your project and there is no preview frame timeline like in other daws, you get lost very fast when you work on a project. I dont see video support as something "extra" but as something crucial for a lot of people (audiovisual artists, film post pro, VR, AR , etc ) so this is nothing exotic or new.

To be fair they did indicate that they've had interest in the feature.calimerox wrote: Tue Nov 20, 2018 9:48 am yeah it s weird they re so quiet about video support. Vidplay works, but still it s not handy enough for sound design for film or vr imo..

I can see how live preview on scrolling would be workflow-enhancing.
Though, wouldn't it be possible to use established video editors (I assume preview functionality being present there) and have the transport / timelines synced with Bitwig Studio? So for example you'd preview it in the video editor, and once you select a point in time in the video editor, that Bitwig Studio then also automatically jumps to that time?

I don't know about you guys, but today I almost never write music to exactly fit a video. It is almost always the other way around. It all starts with a nice piece of music and a rough cut of the video and then I align the video to fit to the beats of the song. But I don't do TV shows or movies, just promotional stuff and YouTube things.
So I don't think that Bitwig really needs internal video capabilities. But some additional features like a SMPTE timeline and external sync signals would be great additions when I'd like to use an external video player.

@ wavedigit yes that would be great & for most people sufficient as well. But with bitwig it is not possible (with the exception and problems I ve mentioned). there is xjadeo working great with all DAW s I tried, but not with bitwig...
@ Benutzername I agree an external video player would be sufficient.
for me it s also not about playing in sync to a video or composing in sync, but for sound post (dialog editing, sound design ,foley, ADR, etc...) it is crucial to have if you want to get any sound on your image in sync...

If BWS supports MTC (I think it does with the release of v2), it can work with Non Lethal Application’s VideoSlave. It’s an expensive solution, but if you are doing commercial work it will pay for itself with efficiency gains pretty quickly.

It's quite puzzling why a DAW like Bitwig Studio doesn't have a Video Track feature builtin to it in 2022.

Using a proper video editor in parallel with Bitwig would be nice. Shotcut for instance supports jack audio on Linux and can act as a jack master but, it does not communicate the time at the moment. It will start Bitwig when playing a video but will not tell Bitwig at what time it should start. I guess it could be a feature request for the Shotcut team.

I have a little Max patch, that can sync to Bitwig via MTC. You can run it in the free Max demo mode... get it here:

Or the sources as Max Project:

If you're scoring to video Bitwig probably isn't your first choice of DAW. Obviously, you can use it, but other DAWS (logic, Cubase, Studio One etc) seems to specialise in this and have Dolby, 5.1, 7.1 video import/syncing and lots of midi articulation and score editing...Muziksculp wrote: Sun Oct 30, 2022 8:50 pm It's quite puzzling why a DAW like Bitwig Studio doesn't have a Video Track feature builtin to it in 2022.![]()
Live has a more fun and creative appro0ach to video (you can warp the video!) but personally, I would say this is better for short (music) type videos and create experimental stuff, may be enough for many, but probably not the first choose for scoring a move with a lot of foley etc.
I would say being able to quantise audio like midi or even midi comping is more of a priority...
X32 Desk, i9 PC, S88MK3, S1, BWS, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6 Pro3, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone II, OP1-F, OPXY, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!

Well, it is always my first choice, as I can't get into the flow easier. My solution with a synced Video is all I need to get me flowing. The final tweaking I can do in Logic which also renders the result into the Video...
For combining Video and Audio I recently came across another tool: https://mifi.no/losslesscut/
And if you wanted a single tool to also do the visual part, DaVinci Resolve comes with a full Fairlight DAW, and is free for us poor artists (only the rich ones have to pay...)

u-u-u created a controller script for Bitwig that does sync the XJADEO video window via OSC and is very nicely implemented with settings for path and framerate per Bitwig project:
viewtopic.php?t=593371
For me this actually solves the issue with basic playback sync and works better than vidplay since it's not bound to a single track. Of course for detail editing it still isn't the first choice, but in a nonlinear DAW like Bitwig, scrubbing isn't really possible I guess.
Big kudos to u-u-u for this idea and implementation!
Cheers,
Tom

i’ve said it before and it bears repeating: for such a great sound design palette, BWS is conspicuously absent in the sound-to-picture department. i personally think it’s a huge blind spot to not be able to work with images in a more organic way and the frontier it becomes with the addition of tools in the grid. sure other DAWs have all the more standard features to the workflow for picture but in terms of pushing boundaries with what can be done i find it lacking.
