Logic Pro 10.5 is out!

I bought LPX when it came out for €179 and haven't paid a cent for an update/upgrade now in 7 years. The money saved from not having to purchase upgrades/updates will arguably take a decent chunk off the price of a new iMac when that time rolls around. The more I see of 10.5 the more impressed I am. It does appear Apple is trying to take out other DAWs, though.

So logic 10.5 in combination with an ipad is it close to ableton with a novation launchpad? On youtube videos i can see ok logic has a nice clip launcher but i have no experience with those novation /ableton combination.Jet Set wrote: Thu May 14, 2020 9:13 am I had recently got back into ITB electronic music making after 10yrs away...had decided to commit to logic as it was what I remembered from my previous music making.
I have spent the last few months kicking myself for not committing to Ableton as the more time I spent with logic - the more Ableton seems to be what I really should have gone for...
But not anymore!
This looks EXACTLY what I was wanting...the sequencer is sweet, the loop view seems to work well...
I can’t tell you how much I am looking forward to programming NI Battery drum patterns without having to use either the damn piano roll or a third party step sequencer!
The only thing I want now to make it perfect - is effects racks like Ableton!
Having to open and close strings of fx plugin windows is a pain and interupts the old creative flow...
Other than that - this looks marvellous!

Not quite the same, but similar principle, at least with the triggeringauron wrote: Thu May 14, 2020 1:01 pm So logic 10.5 in combination with an ipad is it close to ableton with a novation launchpad? Does the Studio One step sequencer have a basic transpose yet?gentleclockdivider wrote: Tue May 12, 2020 2:25 pm uhh have a look at stud.one stepsquencer.
Up untill now it was the only daw with a step seq. that has such an advanced feature set ( and it still is )
Time signatures per lane, tell me one other daw that can do this ( I am not talking about steps per lane )

This will probably be the only big big update for Logic for a long long while. This update doesn't beat the workflow of studio one still, but this is good enough until Logic users get bored.

Via Impact click pitch right then select "edit automation transpose". Done. Is also premapped to the Atom knobs when using step sequencer.Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote: Thu May 14, 2020 1:49 pmDoes the Studio One step sequencer have a basic transpose yet?gentleclockdivider wrote: Tue May 12, 2020 2:25 pm uhh have a look at stud.one stepsquencer.

Can anyone confirm that latest Antares Autotune (I’m using Artist version) works in 10.5? I use it in most of my tracks.
I think once I know that it will work I will update as soon as I finish the current project I’m working on. Seems like the rest of my plugins have been confirmed to work at least on their latest versions.

It isn’t officially supported. That’s the whole point of DOSDude1’s patches for Mojave installers: they let you install on unsupported machines. But my 12,2 would be useless on Mojave because the GPU isn’t supported.jonljacobi wrote: Tue May 12, 2020 7:29 pmI'm a bit confused. You say 12,2 but that 10.14.6 is the last it supports. I didn't think 12,2 officially supported Mojave. Regardless, I hope you aren't forced to buy anytime soon.Jace-BeOS wrote: Tue May 12, 2020 6:45 pmDepends on your specific model. I just looked at DOSDude1’s patched installers for Mojave and my iMac 12,2 definitely is NOT going to work (the AMD 6xxx GPU isn’t supported and I can’t disable it to use a CPU-integrated GPU). Other items may also fail to operate, like the iSight camera, or even wireless.jonljacobi wrote: Tue May 12, 2020 6:40 pmThere are ways to update to the newer OS versions. Just look around.
Be very careful to read all issues before trying a patched installer!!

They’re still mostly bitmapped graphics where all this flat shit is to be found, not vector graphics. Scaling has nothing to do with it. Also: if it’s shit design, I don’t care how scalable it might actually be.h2ogun99 wrote: Tue May 12, 2020 7:35 pmAgree. Exactly why street signs will never be 3D models - they are there to serve a purpose. I believe the flat look is not a design choice because some people think it looks cool. Instead, it enables scaling/resizing to occur much easier due to being vector-based. They are accommodating our desire for control and various screen resolutions.jonljacobi wrote: Tue May 12, 2020 6:48 pm I think the flat minimalism in design is just a reflection of what's happened with physical design. I chalk it up to seeking calm in an ever noisier, both audibly and visually, world. I think it's gone too far, as you don't have to worship skeuomorphism to acknowledge that we see and interpret 3D, and if used wisely, it will speed recognition and cognition.

I definitely use custom icons. I just don’t like the built in icons (and the UI design itself, which they flattened at 10.4(?)) being compromised for some kind of mental illness at Apple where their obsession with flat design is concerned.machinesworking wrote: Tue May 12, 2020 7:58 pmYou can create your own custom icons. I always hated the stock Logic icons, so years ago I learned how, and it's super easy now. This is absolutely the least of our worries GUI wise. I like darker colors and would like to just take the whole theme down a notch, no can do without buying some dudes custom themes, where he made "realistic" looking knobs and sliders that don't match the rest of the program..Jace-BeOS wrote: Tue May 12, 2020 5:39 pmAppearance IMPACTS UI-readability, and therefore directly impacts functionality. I respect where you're coming from, but I am a VERY visually-oriented person. This flat fad is absolutely hurting me more than other people who are comfortable to rely only on text labels. Yet another way in which I have to suffer as an invisible minority, I guess.Forgotten wrote: Tue May 12, 2020 5:35 pm Can't say I really care what the icons look like, it's the functionality that I care about, and I'll bet they change them again on the next update...
*Edit* They respond to track color? That's cool.![]()

They’re doing one better in my case: forcing me to buy another Mac because Mojave doesn’t support my iMac 12,2 from 2011(?). I’ve been waiting for a proper pro Mac for ages and their 2019 Mac Plutocrat is obviously not meant for my poverty-stricken bank account.apoclypse wrote: Tue May 12, 2020 11:46 pmThat's no secret. That's why Apple bought Emagic and FCP in the first place to have pro level software on their platforms which they control and that use their technologies so they can sell more hardware. Apple may not love us but unless everyone buys a new Mac every year, it sure feels nice to have a DAW that get updated on regular basis and all I paid for it was $199 all the way back in 2013.Jolaff wrote: Tue May 12, 2020 11:12 pmDo you think it's pure generosity coming from deep love they have for you ?...or they just calculated they will get more of your money by hooking you to their hardware with their software ?

Money that Apple would make from paid upgrades would probably be insignificant for them...

I've always seen it more as a way to get people to upgrade to the latest OS. Which is why I'm surprised that they didn't force it this time.

I've had Push, but not Launchpad. I prefer the iPad to Push... much more visual and less button pushes and button combos. A few minutes with Logic Remote on my iPad Pro and I understood it and could make good use of it. Good mixer view, can tweak synths and fx, etc.Forgotten wrote: Thu May 14, 2020 1:31 pmNot quite the same, but similar principle, at least with the triggeringauron wrote: Thu May 14, 2020 1:01 pm So logic 10.5 in combination with an ipad is it close to ableton with a novation launchpad? You're asking for when editing or playing? Because for the latter you can use the chord track or Repeater Note FX.Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote: Thu May 14, 2020 1:49 pm Does the Studio One step sequencer have a basic transpose yet?
