The most obvious example of static samples is where you have one or too few hi-hat samples. So you clearly hear repeating patterns in the hi-hats and no variation or "feel" to working the pedal or stick position apart from volume. Synthesizing hi-hats can overcome this problem which otherwise requires a large (30+ samples?) set of samples and dedication (via a plug-in or manual effort) to arrange them well.

Since 16ths or 8ths hi-hats are some of the most common drum machine patterns, it's often very evident whether you're using samples or not. For the sample-based machines obviously this is one of their key features which makes you say "that's a TR-505/909!" Generic rock kicks and snares can sometimes be hard to pick out but once you add hi-hats and cymbals it's a lot easier.

That's why you usually use 2 or 3 hats, phaser, filter with a hint of lfo movement..

Just because a developer calls a plugin finished doesn't mean it's abandonware.

I've owned all three of those D-16 drum plugins and they're all very nice but I sold Nepheton and Drumazon since I've grown weary of the 808/909. I'd sell Nithonat too since the 606 is pathetic but I think I got it in some giveaway D-16 did in the past and I believe it's NFR.

They're all great drum plugins but again I've grown tired of decades old drum machines. The OP apparently has not......

When you're looking for the most convincing 808 & 909 sounds, i'd recommend Wave Alchemy Revolution and GoldBaby Superanalogue 808 & 909 (sample packs). They make extensive use of round robin sampling, so are far from static. And imo they sound much better than other (synthesized) emulations.
More BPM please

Many years ago I worked with hardware and I had some of the old drum machines and an analog mixer and so on. But meanwhile I'm mostly using samples and sometimes the Kick2 VST or a VST in my DAW and that works, too!

Samples musn't be static. Especially for the Roland TR machines are very good sample collections available e.g. from Goldbaby.

If you have good recorded samples, the next thing is to get them working like in the old drum machines. To get the same "own groove feeling" and "swing charakter", you have to look for "score" files, that's the common name in my DAW for such files and they're midi files. This files working like quantize and put all steps to the position like in the drum machines from them they were recorded. You can record them by yourself, if you record a loop with all steps as an audio file and then convert from it a midi file. The same works with different swing settings, too. But that only works good if you can record very good, so better search for them, I bought them from different sources many years ago. I use them in my DAW sequencer with the quantize user option.

In my DAW is a VST which looks like a simple AKAI MPC 2000. There you can load several samples in one drum pad and control them for example with velocity. With that you can simulate "articulations" or "variations" and that is possible with the most other sampler VSTs, too.

For flexibility of tune for example, I use the Kick2 VST, because there you can load and stack 3 samples and you have an additional drum synth synthesis, which is the most flexible I know. But I don't know, if it is good enough for a purist, too. :D

Perhaps that looks a bit tricky, but you asked for a non static solution and samples are not static, if the user works not static with them!

Listen to this with headphones, in particular the difference of the others to the Roland Cloud one. I hate the Roland Cloud system, but their 808 and 909 sound pretty amazing.

Hi,

The d-16 Nepheton looks interesting, and price is tempting at Plugin Boutique $29. until August 10th.

Any Nepheton users here ? Is it worth buying ? Would you recommend it ? ... any other feedback about it would be cool.

Thanks.

Just a heads up.......

I am still waiting for a great drum synth plugin, that delivers both the classic analog emulations of the 808 and 909 as well as novel engines.

Tremor was nice, but I always hate the damn interface of this drum plugins with sequencers. The perfect drum plugin also comes with one part instrument, drummatic has this and it is awesome when you don't want the whole 8 parts,
