I was a long-time PC user. My last PC was i9900k+64ram+4TB ssd. I bought a mac mini m1 just for fun, to test some stuff, I like computers. It was January 2021. Quick pre-history)SLiC wrote: Wed Jul 14, 2021 10:07 amYup, definitely worth switching to PC for the best performance, you can have more than 16gb RAM as wellSerhii Kot wrote: Wed Jul 14, 2021 9:34 am No improvement in performance on apple silicon chips. The worst performing DAW on apple silicon processors, by now.
It performs ok for small projects thought.![]()
But I was enjoying the mac mini more than I thought I will be. So, I sold my PC. All works +- fine with rosetta, CPU tax around 10-20% in most DAWs.
No need to buy a new PC for now, I will wait for apple silicon support from Ableton. Meanwhile, I have plenty of DAW that performs fine with my mac mini.
PS My electricity bill dropped around 30% after switching to mac mini with m1

I haven't ruled out an M1 MacBook myself...I am not loyal to any particular OS, whatever works, its just a computer, it's the software that runs on it I am interested in! I suspect apple silicon support from Ableton wont be fast just on the basis that nothing is ever fast from Ableton! Maybe the next .1 update will have it as a main feature...they have to keep up with Bitwig after allSerhii Kot wrote: Wed Jul 14, 2021 10:29 amI was a long-time PC user. The same, I can switch my entire workflow to a windows machine in like, 3-4 hours. Half of that will be pointing Native Instruments plugins to sample folders.SLiC wrote: Wed Jul 14, 2021 10:54 am I haven't ruled out an M1 MacBook myself...I am not loyal to any particular OS, whatever works, its just a computer, it's the software that runs on it I am interested in! You must be exagerrating surely? Even considering lower power draw of M1 vs. Intel, most of your bill should still be mundane things like lights, refrigerator, vacuum cleaner, washing machine/dryer, TV, your studio gear, etc. that haven't changedSerhii Kot wrote: Wed Jul 14, 2021 10:29 am PS My electricity bill dropped around 30% after switching to mac mini with m1![]()

Funny, but not. My PC idle was around 170w. And it was on 8-12 hours a day. Now it's around 30w. So, you can do a math.antic604 wrote: Wed Jul 14, 2021 12:46 pmYou must be exagerrating surely? Maybe Ableton should bring back half of their original devs from BitwigSerhii Kot wrote: Wed Jul 14, 2021 9:34 am No improvement in performance on apple silicon chips. The worst performing DAW on apple silicon processors, by now.

To get Live to natively supports Apple silicone I guess you also have to get MAX to natively supports Apple silicone....that is no simple task I suspect, but they have announced it is being worked on, so could be anytime

ok, is that reason, or it seems plausible. MAX is quite an environment that indeed can communicate with different 'stuff', inside and outside.SLiC wrote: Wed Jul 14, 2021 2:01 pm To get Live to natively supports Apple silicone I guess you also have to get MAX to natively supports Apple silicone....that is no simple task I suspect, but they have announced it is being worked on, so could be anytime

o well, i have windows 10.. i go on, living..
(not to start a discussion, but developers they keep their mouth shut, or sometimes say something about, but they get crazy when again, things are broken on macOS. the one that did said it out load, got a shitload of comments, but was one of the first with full native M1 support...
of course their are developers well-versed on mac, and quite fast with it.
o i see a developer, that develops on a Mac, still don't have all plugins to M1, or rosetta, or how is it called.
yes i am starting a discussion, sorry.... i don't care what you work with mac/apple or windows or linux, what will work for you. M2 will arrive at some point.. that will be the real jump, M1 isn't really yet... i am curious.. so i go were the wind blows... but it was always windows...)

I think there's now a general impetus towards supporting the ARM architecture and whether they're in a hurry or not, software vendors realize that. Qualcomm now has Apple's old chief of engineering for Apple Silicon and coincidentally, just announced that they'll have a chip competitive performance-wise with Apple silicon for the Surface, etc. Surprise, surprise
Now if it has the x86 addressing mode that the Apple silicon has, then you might see Windows for ARM's x86 emulation evolve to Rosetta 2 standards. At that point, it will be very desirable to have your code ported.
Regardless, the port of Ableton and related doesn't seem to be a super high priority. More like something that will be done when it's done.

According to whom? Because all I read on the internet is people complaining how Live 11 runs (even) worse than 10 and especially terrible on Apple Silicon.jonljacobi wrote: Thu Jul 15, 2021 3:54 pmRegardless, the port of Ableton and related doesn't seem to be a super high priority. Obviously only those that have issues complain, so there's bias here. But it's quite staggering.

According to me and what they told me when I talked to them for my Macworld review. That said, they're not particularly outgoing so who knows? Live 11 runs fine for me, no worse than 10, so I can't address that. And it ran "decently" on the 16GB M1 Mini I tried it on. Maybe a 20% slower than my i7-6700. That's audio performance. Visually it was snappy and them some.
