That changed in 2016, when we did a sale for Diva's 5th anniversary.

As our newest product, Twangström, turns 4 years old next month, the thing that should be absolutely clear to everyone is that we prioritise improving existing plug-ins (updates!) over creating new ones. We could easily leave our old products orphaned and do four - six badass little synths a year, bargaining on our reputation and making a hell of a lot of money on leveraged code.

However, we don't do latter, which benefits existing users (and sustainability) more so than our own accounts. The only way to keep latter in liquidity is to occasionally do this or that kind of sale. So we usually do something like "here's an incentive if you sign up to our newsletter" or "hey look, we teamed up with Bitwig", or - even more rarely - we do a BF sale or this kind of NI thing.

So it's a sale by U He?

NI wasn't the one who decided to do the sale, right? U He decided to do the sale, but done through NI instead.

?

Obviously it's a crosspromotion or whatever you'd call it. While some people seem to assume that u-he is some kind of world dominating business, we can not just order other companies to do as we please.

What I dislike is if Soundwide becomes that dominating business. This is what I absolutely do not want and am trying to avoid.

Why no Bazille in this sale?

Post

Because it's at Izo due to the merger with NI, and NI only sells what's NKS ready...

Post

Just snapped up Diva, been thinking about getting this for years! :tu:

It's becoming a little hard to digest for someone who paid the full price just a few month ago...

but now is a good time to buy something else while there's a sale, so... all good yes?

If you are more or less well stocked on everything and you don't buy for helping to keep a dev afloat, for every product (of every company), a good rule of thumb is to research price of past sales and only buy new or secondhand at around that price (requires research).

U-he stuff is solid in that they don't discontinue stuff, so at least you didn't buy full price to then have it discontinued. They are excellent in that regard. Also your product won't become NFR.

My personal theory is that the sales are ONLY happening that often because lately they are getting constantly sidetracked (Mac breaking changes, VST3 licensing issues leading to CLAP), are in a reduced manpower situation and can barely release updates/new stuff. Not a good situation to be in considering that the economic forecast for the next year(s) is/are looking uncertain, so they are trying to get some capital before an hypothetical economic downturn. Let's hope they succeed both in funding and in ramping up the release schedule.

For me, as a client that owns most products, I certainly prefer the product sale(s) to bankrupt and company resale to investors that only optimize for shareholder value.

I might add, we have had an exceptional year. Not much of a sign of a downturn. We haven't "teamed up" with NI out of desperation.

We do think very, very long term though. It's not like we need to fill gaps in our portfolio. Instead, we feel we can build upon the portfolio we have. I think we have reached maybe 10% of the market share that's possible. Maybe 25% with Diva, maybe 5% with Repro or Hive. That's like more than the rest of my leftover average life span, so no rush from my side.

I do feel the urge to develop new stuff. I crave doing a proper Mini, a Cat SRM, a JP-4, a S 770 or 800DV, the Synthex. We have new algorithms and technologies that IMHO absolutely rock, Z3 stuff.

But alas, let's finish Filterscape, Uhbik and Tyrell first. While that happens, bit and pieces of Z3 come together.

Urs, I kinda laughed yesterday when you said you could release 2-4 synths a year by reusing code and not focusing so much maintenance and supporting existing products. My first reaction was, "that doesn't sound bad at all!" Hearing all the stuff you want to get to sounds awesome. Hope to see it all some day. Throw Diva 2 in that list please!

Hey guys, I'm very tempted to get a couple of these on sale, but I fear that there are some downsides to buying them with NI/Izotope?

I don't get it, will I get some kind of different serial? Will it work differently than if I would buy it directly from Urs?

Are my fears unfounded?

Post

Fears are unfounded. You'll quickly end up with a download link for the products you buy, and you'll download at the U-he website. And you might quickly regret having a day job that forces you away from your new tools. Or maybe the boss lets you run a daw at break times...or maybe you ARE the boss, and you'll jam when you feel like it...
Cheers
