Plugin subscriptions make as much sense as a plumber who rents his tools on a monthly basis.

Or in my case like a DIYer who needs to subscribe to all plumbing tools monthly so that I can use a plunger and a wrench once in a while.

It’s interesting that there are 2 main models of cloud server software licensing, one where you pay for a certain number of uses or time per month say and the other where you’re effectively renting a server or subscribing to allow full use for a month and it seems only the latter style seems to have had any traction in music software.
In fact the only audio use of the “pay as you use” model I’ve seen were some companies that let you run your audio through their expensive studio hardware like vintage compressors and download the result.

From what Ive read of the push to subs in the music production business, it may be more like this...say youre a big pipe wrench maker with a solid clientele of pro plumbers. These guys replace tools as needed and buy new ones that are developed. Along comes a disruptive global pandemic and your plumber clientele cant make the essential house calls as much but more importantly, their clients, the home owners realize they could do some repairs themselves. They dont have tools but for an annual fee they will get them from you. Instead of selling to the one plumber you can get some of his 100 homeowner customers who are forced to stay home anyway and dont mind trying to save money on repairs. The homeowners will mostly make bad repairs but its their home so who cares. Youre alienated your plumber customers but if they go away you have hundreds more happy to pay for access to pro tools to mess things up.

Well see how this works for Waves but it may be a money maker

Not defending Waves AT ALL but I think this is a bit cheap on Softube’s part. Not a fan of businesses taking pops at others. Their portfolio is getting pretty big now and I’ve noticed (although not down to 29.99 levels) their prices have dropped considerably. Will be interesting to see if their business model holds up in the future with increasing tech debt and how long it is before their Subscription offer emerges.

Agreed. Not defending Waves and I like Softube. Have lots of their stuff. Just saying I don’t like companies scoring hits off each other as a marketing tactic. Should be better than that and it might well come back to haunt them in the future. Just my opinion and not a big deal.

Considering how competitive the market is, I think this is exactly what Softube should be doing to show how it's not Waves.

There's lots of Waves customers now looking for alternatives... Softube just spelled it out that they're an available alternative.

Agreeing with you in principle, but what if a business pulls a stunt so far outside of the norm that it sends a shockwave throughout the entire industry? That’s exactly what WAVES has done.

Their move is two-sided: not only have they devalued virtually every WAVES perpetual license, they’ve also made wise audio software/plugin buyers wary of purchasing going forward; ie ‘Who’s next? Who’s going to be the next company to do this to their perpetual license holders, large and small?’

When a company as large as WAVES does something like this, and there’s ultimately no consequences to WAVES for doing this, it sets an unhealthy example.

I see an opportunity that if it were my business, I wouldn’t want to miss either. There’s going to be lots of angry decision making, so drawing attention now seem it could be important.
